This could be Max Redfield's year.
Notre Dame's junior safety, who turned heads daily throughout spring practices, was named to the watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award, which acknowledges college football's top defensive back, on Monday.
A 6-foot-1, 198-pound safety, Redfield's production has yet to match his five-star expectations in South Bend. In his first two seasons, Redfield started in 12 of 25 games, making 80 tackles with a lone interception.
No other Notre Dame defensive back, including established cornerbacks KeiVarae Russell and Cole Luke, appeared on the initial watch list.
