#NDInsider Twitter Chatter: Notre Dame-Virginia

ND Insider Staff Report

Well, that was interesting.

In one of the strangest and most thrilling Notre Dame football games of the season, Irish fans rode a roller coaster of emotions in a 34-27 victory at Virginia.

Some of it was captured in the #NDInsider Twitter Chatter with Tyler James. Any tweets using the hashtag were eligible for the postgame recap. Here's another look at the ups and downs from Saturday.

Notre Dame started the scoring with a little trickeration in the first quarter. Instead of settling for a field goal to finish their first drive, the Irish completed a fake field goal for a seven-yard touchdown. Holder DeShone Kizer faked a toss over his head and shoveled the ball forward to tight end Durham Smythe, who finished the play in the end zone. Notre Dame followed the touchdown with an odd trick play for a two-point conversion which failed.

A FAKE?!?! Who would've thought? Certainly not Virginia. #NDInsider#GoIrish

After Notre Dame opened up a 12-0 lead in the first quarter, Virginia charged back with two touchdowns to take a 14-12 halftime advantage. Notre Dame fans had plenty of ideas how to fix the issues.

@TJamesNDI#NDInsider showtime tell them to keep it close in the first half for better TV?

Panic set in quickly when quarterback Malik Zaire left the game with an injury. He needed to be helped off following a three-yard run late in the third quarter. Fans would later learn Zaire's injury, a fractured right ankle, would end his season.

This isn't real life. #NDInsider

— Stephanie Hastings (@sb_hastings) September 12, 2015

#NDInsider. That's the season folks. Always the risk with his running but a risk that had to be taken. God bless #MalikZaire and good luck

After the Irish surrendered a 26-14 lead, Notre Dame needed a game-winning drive from sophomore quarterback DeShone Kizer with 1:54 left on the clock. Kizer delivered with a 39-yard bomb to wide receiver Will Fuller to win the game with 12 seconds left.
