Running back A.J. Dillon chose to take his own path Monday.

The four-star recruit verbally committed to Michigan a little more than a week after visiting his grandfather's alma mater, Notre Dame. Dillon is the grandson of former Irish All-American Thom Gatewood.

Dillon returned to Notre Dame for junior day earlier this month. The 6-foot, 228-pound running back previously visited Notre Dame for the Irish Invasion and received an offer from the Irish in January.

The junior at Groton (Mass.) Lawrence Academy also reported offers from Florida State, Wisconsin and Iowa, among others.

Rivals ranks Dillon as the No. 16 running back in the 2017 class. 247Sports slates him No. 18 at the position.
