Notre Dame's John Montelus set to transfer to Virginia
Impending Notre Dame transfer John Montelus’ search for a new school ended quickly.
The 6-foot-4, 310-pound senior offensive lineman announced Sunday on Instagram that he’ll take his final season of eligibility at the University of Virginia.
The Cavaliers were in the mix for Montelus coming out of high school, before the Everett, Mass., product ultimately chose the Irish. But the former top 100 prospect nationally couldn’t find much traction for playing time at ND, either as an offensive guard or during a brief defensive line experiment in 2016 that was abandoned at midseason.
He saw cameos in six games over four years at ND and never in high-leverage situations. Because he’ll have his ND degree, Montelus can employ a grad school-style transfer and not be subject to a season of sitting out per NCAA rules.
