#NDInsider Twitter Chatter: Notre Dame-Navy

IRISH STEW

South Bend Tribune

Twitter can be a fun (or depressing) and brutally honest (or unreasonable) place during Notre Dame football games. That's why we open up this space for the #NDInsider Twitter Chatter after games.

During the game, readers are encouraged to send their thoughts and observations with the #NDInsider hashtag to be considered for our postgame fan recap. They joined us with their 140-character takes during the game.

With Notre Dame wearing its branded "Rockne Heritage" uniforms against Navy, it was only fitting that the first two comments were fashion-focused.

Was really hoping in honor of #RockneHeritageGame Brian Kelly would be wearing an overcoat & fedora. #oldschool#NDInsider#NDvsNavy#GoIrish

Wimbush’s glove looks FAB-u-LOUS, got him feeling like #ndinsider@TJamesNDIpic.twitter.com/jdWadtREvY

Brandon Wimbush didn't shake his poor passing performance against Miami in the early going against Navy. He completed only one of his five passes in the first quarter on a nasty day in South Bend.

One of Wimbush's incomplete passes was thrown high to Equanimeous St. Brown, who fell on his head after jumping up and being unable to catch the pass while being hit at his legs. St. Brown would not return to the game after the play.

@NDFootball please send Brandon to QB camp this off season. Love his athleticism but he absolutely NEEDS to get his passing down. #NDInsider

— Nick Gonzalez (@nickg1421) November 18, 2017

Though extremely athletic, Brandon Wimbush has the worst accuracy I’ve witnessed at Notre Dame #NDInsider#NavyvsND

— Joel DeLorge (@JoelDeLorge) November 18, 2017

I’m sorry but Wimbush needs to be benched before he gets one of the WR killed with another high throw; been all year! #NDInsider

— Justin (@JB4Irish) November 18, 2017

Wimbush has a hard enough time throwing the the ball in GOOD conditions. WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU THROW THE BALL SO MUCH IN YHIS WEATHER?!? #NDInsider

— Nick Gonzalez (@nickg1421) November 18, 2017

Wimbush is definitely having some confidence issues...he is throwing too high and missing the easiest of passes...you can't tell me this is all weather related #NDInsider#NAVYvsND

— Cocosnapslife (@cdn515) November 18, 2017

Brandon Wimbush is so trash, I can't handle it. At this point I'd rather see Brian Van Gordor. #NDInsider#NotreDame#Irish

— Patrick Darlington (@PatDarlington) November 18, 2017

Despite the lack of a passing game, Notre Dame left the first quarter with a 3-0 lead. Navy totaled 67 rushing yards in the first 15 minutes.

#NDInsider another brilliant game plan by a Brian Kelly coached Notre Dame team

And another scintillating quarter in the NDvNavy game is in the books #ughhhh#NDInsider#NDvsNavy

#NDInsider if Navy played ND every week Navy would be undefeated.

Notre Dame looks so uninterested #NDInsider

— Paul Darling (@Paulie932) November 18, 2017

Navy finished its first drive of the second quarter with a field goal to tie the game. Notre Dame's defense appeared to stop Navy on its next possession, but then Chris Finke fumbled a punt return to give the ball right back to the Midshipmen. Navy took advantage of the mistake with its first touchdown of the game and a 10-3 lead.

This team lacks the leadership needed to be resilient in the face of adversity #NDInsider

— The AllFather (@DucktalesDave) November 18, 2017

#NDInsider time for Kelly to go this is beyond pathetic coaching

— joe smith (@dd6t5) November 18, 2017

#NDInsider Navy with the ball 1st in 2nd half. Has the feel ND will be down by anoth score

— Bob Alvey (@jack5083) November 18, 2017

I am offended by the notion consistently pushed by the university and its coaching staffs over the last 25 years that its football team can compete for a national championship when it’s teams have consistently shown otherwise. #NDInsider#whydoievenbother#imtoooldforthis

— yo murphy (@rofeal1) November 18, 2017

Notre Dame has just completely given up. This is scary. #NDInsider

— Stephanie Winters (@stephie_winters) November 18, 2017

Notre Dame responded with a touchdown drive in just a minute's time to tie the game at 10. Wimbush powered into the end zone on a two-yard run with eight seconds left.

It wasn't a pretty half by any means, but the Irish managed to escape without a deficit. Still, a 10-10 tie was less than satisfactory for many Irish fans.

Wimbush avoiding those high fives and grimacing on sideline is bothersome. #ndinsider

#NDINSIDER this is exactly why Alabama plays Mercer or Clemson plays The Citadel or the Big 10 plays with itself. Who needs the headache.

I am so torn with this game, love the tradition, but a no-win situation against a gritty opponent is nerve-wracking #NDInsider

When are they going to shut Adams down?He hasn't been right for 3 weeks, tip toeing through holes.#NDInsider

— Bob Alvey (@jack5083) November 18, 2017

#NDInsider

That was about as bad as a half ever, almost worse then watching grass grow.... Past two weeks look like a total different team both sides of the ball...

— Peter Dragon (@deeezelfumes) November 18, 2017

Navy marched down the field on the first drive of the second half and took a 17-10 lead with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Zach Abey to Craig Scott. The Midshipmen drove 72 yards in 15 plays and taking 7:59 off the clock.

#NDInsider what a joke. Pathetic this team will win nothing as long as Brian Kelly remains the head coach @NDFootball

— joe smith (@dd6t5) November 18, 2017

Cannot lose to Navy again...#notredamefootball#NDInsider

— Kevin Hastings (@KevinIrishndhas) November 18, 2017

Given the character this team showed up until the Miami game, I'm shocked that they've appeared to give up on this season. #ndfb#NDInsider#NAVYvsND

— Resister Persister (@LoveMIIrish) November 18, 2017

Ridiculous that Navy has a better passing game and more creative play calling than the Gutless Irish. #NDInsider@961Sportsbeat

#NDInsider I think vangorder is back as d coordinator...

#NDINSIDER more painful: watching this game or a root canal with no pain meds?

— Gary Veteto (@vetetogary) November 18, 2017

It's so frustrating to watch your team play Navy. 6,7,8 yard rush, over and over again. #NDInsider

— Caleb Hanson (@hansoncaleb) November 18, 2017

Notre Dame tied the game on the very next possession with only five plays. Wimbush found Kevin Stepherson for a 30-yard touchdown. The score would set up a clean slate for the fourth quarter.

ND Defense about to put USNA on Coney Island #NDInsider

— Patrick (@mpatrick_24) November 18, 2017

Notre Dame took a 24-17 lead on another touchdown reception between Wimbush and Stepherson. An interception by Troy Pride Jr. ended one Navy drive, but the Midshipmen would take over following a Notre Dame three-and-out with 5:33 remaining and a chance to extend the game.

ND may have left Navy with too much time left to tie the game in the 4th quarter... #NDInsider

— Paul_In_Maple (@CLE_CLCFan) November 18, 2017

Look like we might be headed ot OT. Hope Navy doesn’t go for 2 if the score. #NDInsider

— Bob Alvey (@jack5083) November 18, 2017

Commence NDNation meltdown in 3....too late already happened #NDInsider#NDvsNavy#ughhh

— Jason Rideout (@fuzzbucket43) November 18, 2017

Notre Dame in trouble. Not much time left. @NavyFB score, their going for 2. #NDInsider#NAVYvsND#NotreDame

— Joel DeLorge (@JoelDeLorge) November 18, 2017

Notre Dame held on by forcing Navy into a turnover on downs. On fourth-and-five at Notre Dame's 25-yard line, Navy tried to get slotback Darryl Bonner to complete a pass to tight end Tyler Carmona. The attempt failed. Notre Dame escaped with a 24-17 win on Senior Day.

Embarrassing performance, and not sure why it continues every year against Navy. Nothing to gain, everything to lose. #NDInsider

Credit to the senior leaders on this team for coming back in the second half with a winning approach in their final home game. (This is the exact type of game last year’s team figured out how to lose.) #NDinsider

— Donald (@Fresno_Domer) November 18, 2017

Wimbush had great second half

Did great only allowing 17 pts and 277 yds on ground

Will really miss McGlinchey and Nelson next year

Troy Pride was solid #NDInsider
