#NDInsider Twitter Chatter: Notre Dame-Pittsburgh

IRISH STEW

Tyler James
South Bend Tribune

Twitter can be a fun (or depressing) and brutally honest (or unreasonable) place during Notre Dame football games. That's why we open up this space for the #NDInsider Twitter Chatter following games.

During the game, readers are encouraged to send their thoughts and observations with the #NDInsider hashtag to be considered for our postgame fan recap. They joined us with their 280-character takes during the game.

The first quarter of Notre Dame's matchup with Pittsburgh went by quick, and the Panthers took the lead first. On a drive that took 9:43 and was revived when Notre Dame safety Nicco Fertitta jumped offsides before a punt, Pittsburgh gave the Irish their first seven-point deficit of the year.

Running back Qadree Ollison capped the 17-play drive with a nine-yard touchdown run.

Is it just me or am I seeing lots of holding from Pitt offensive line? On Okwara, Hinish, Kareem... #NDInsider#NDFootball

#NotreDame defensive line is getting man handled right now. Not a good start. #NDInsider#GoIrish#BeatPitt#NDvsPitt

— Chris Buckley (@Toefer15) October 13, 2018

Jumping offsides on a punt is just like a turnover. We better be able to stop the run or it’s going to be a long day and upset #NDInsider

— Geisha Man (@Geisha5083) October 13, 2018

I’m confused... this can’t be ND I’m watching. #NDInsider

— Stephanie Winters (@stephie_winters) October 13, 2018

Notre Dame fans didn't love trailing Pitt 7-0 after one quarter.

#NDInsider poor decisions by Ian Book. Could this be a Brandon Wimbush game?

I'm ok with our team facing a little adversity especially against a 3-3 team...we gotta see how we react to things breaking against us and mental mistakes...let's regroup for the 2nd quarter fellas #GOIRISH#NDInsider#PITTvsND

The second quarter didn't go much better for Notre Dame's offense. But at least the Irish scored. A pair of drives stalled and Justin Yoon kicked field goals to cut the Pitt lead to 7-6 at halftime.

#NDInsider@EHansenNDI Pitt D looks like best unit in the country. Flying around the field today

— AJG (@AJ_Gelson) October 13, 2018

At least we have Yoon #NDInsider

— Caleb Hanson (@hansoncaleb) October 13, 2018

#NDInsider Glad BK said we were prepared for this game. Would hate to se what we look like if we weren’t

— Geisha Man (@Geisha5083) October 13, 2018

Irish fans shared their concerns with the way the team played in the first half. Quarterback Ian Book finished the half 13-of-18 passing for 106 yards with one interception and was pressured 10 times.

#NDInsider offense looks horrible in every single aspect! Running, blocking and receivers can not get open!!! Against Pitt!!! https://t.co/OS3hY4Ll3B

— Josh McPeak (@VALambeauLeaper) October 13, 2018

#NDinsider what if we were playing a top 10 team

— Peter Moulder (@pvm33) October 13, 2018

Ian Book making very poor decisions.#NDInsider

— Andrew Rhodes (@A_Rhodes77) October 13, 2018

Im concerned that Ian Book has missed so many open WR on blitzes. Also that our running game is non existent. #NDInsider

— Travis Cromley (@AF_Cromley) October 13, 2018

We look completely unprepared to handle blitzes #NDInsider

— Nick Blashill (@nickblashill) October 13, 2018

#NDInsider Where is the O Line dominating the Pitt D minus there best player.

— John Heizelman (@jheizelm) October 13, 2018

Where is the O line against one of the worst defenses in country?? #NDInsider

— Christa Williams (@Christa4) October 13, 2018

#NDInsiderpic.twitter.com/9s9zTzaOe3

— Bob Carroll (@BCarroll3) October 13, 2018

Book and the o-line's poor blitz recognition, Book's refusal to trust what he sees and throw the ball quick and take a hit, need some major adjustments at halftime, need to run the ball and take some of the load off Book's shoulders when he's clearly not comfortable #NDInsider

— Section 312 Sports (@sect312sports) October 13, 2018

O-line #NDInsider

— Brian Milam (@CPTurf) October 13, 2018

The OL play. Getting dominated by Pitt. Irish cannot run against a team giving up 225 YPG. Book is under assault every time he drops to pass by a team averaging 1 sack per game but already has 3 by halftime. The OL needs to figure things out ASAP. #NDInsider

— Stephen Lynch (@Lynch_nd1063) October 13, 2018

#NDinsider Run has been an issue last 2 weeks, missing Heistand clearly. ND OL did poorly in run vs. VT until Dexters long run. Gotta establish run to open up pass

— ZV (@zirmani) October 13, 2018

#ndInsider Pitt game is always a TRAP GAME.

— Olivier Daoust (@OliDaoust) October 13, 2018

Need hurry up no huddle offense! Book needs rhythm and this is only way to get it. Bonus the defense has to be more basic #NDInsider

— Bryan Sharpe (@irisharpe) October 13, 2018

The third quarter started with disasters. Pittsburgh's XX Ffrench returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. Then Book threw an interception.

And just like that Book throws an Int #NDInsider

— Caleb Hanson (@hansoncaleb) October 13, 2018

#NDInsider can blame that idiot from Barstoole for this?

— Adam Schlutt (@bigmaac24) October 13, 2018

Is it Wimbush time? He can run better which might be the key here.#NDInsider

— Ed Johnson (@hockeypimp17) October 13, 2018

Brandon Wimbush time?#NDinsider#irish@NDFootball

— Clint Marsh (@ClintMarsh1961) October 13, 2018

Book gave the Irish life on an eight-play, 71-yard drive that ended with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Chase Claypool. He failed to complete a pass to Miles Boykin on a two-point conversion attempt, leaving the score at 14-12 Pitt.

Notre Dame trailed by two heading into the fourth quarter. Would someone step up and make a play for the Irish to win the game?

HOW ABOUT THE FOOTBALL TEAM, TYLER. #NDInsiderhttps://t.co/DqZmx5Zmb4

Ian Book #NDInsider

— Jamie St. Angel (@StangelJamie) October 13, 2018

Book and Boykin filled the hero roles. The two connected for the go-ahead touchdown with 5:43 left. As it did for most of the game, the defense took care of the rest. The Irish escaped with a 19-14 victory.

Not pretty, but a win is a win. #NDinsider

— Jeff Shubert (@jmshubert) October 13, 2018

This #NotreDame game shows you even more how impressive Bama is week to week. #NDInsider

— Chris Buckley (@Toefer15) October 13, 2018

Wow. Couldn’t even tweet all game out of confusion and embarrassment. That didn’t feel like a win, but we’ll take it. Two weeks to clean some stuff up. #NDInsider

— Stephanie Winters (@stephie_winters) October 13, 2018

You have to survive bad days to have a crack at championships. Notre Dame had a bad day today. Hopeful it is a wake up call. #PITTvsND#NDInsider#GOIRISH

— W. Brent Chism (@WBrentC) October 13, 2018

#NDInsider That team was not well prepared for this game and that’s on the coach. Book needs to increase his QB IQ by about 100, the OL & DBs need to get a clue, and the whole team needs to get tougher. A W is a W, but that’s garbage!

— Olivier Daoust (@OliDaoust) October 13, 2018

#NDInsider Georgia losing, UCf losing, Ohio state struggled with Minnesota, penn state struggling with Michigan state, these games happen, but found a way to pull it out, everyone, including the coaches need a bye week

— AM (@NDIrish0824) October 13, 2018

Struggling QB, how about we completely abandon the run game...that should help #NDInsider

— JMK (@JKreef) October 13, 2018

— Nick Gonzalez (@nickg1421) October 13, 2018

sometimes you have a dogfight and you have to scrap to come out on top...#Salute to our defense for keeping us in the game long enough for the offense to wake up #NDInsider#GOIRISH#NDvsPitt

— Cocosnapslife (@cdn515) October 13, 2018

After this performance tomorrow’s #NotreDame victory meal better consist of ramen noodles, PB&Js and Tang. #NDInsider#GoIrish

— Chris Buckley (@Toefer15) October 13, 2018

This offensive line is not good enough. Something has to change. #NDInsider

— Eric Guenette (@irish557) October 13, 2018

We’ve lost these games in previous seasons #ndinsider

— Vito (@VitoSpata4ND) October 13, 2018

Defensive backs save the day.

O line sucks. 22 yrds rushing 1st half. -3 yrds 1st half last week.

But dont worry. None of them will start next year. Recruits are on the way! #NDInsider@NDFootball

— Mike Murphy (@GOPMurphy) October 13, 2018

he did what he was taught and got beat up all game. #NDvsPitt#NDInsider

— Patrick Priest (@PatrickPriestAD) October 13, 2018

Easy to see why ND QBs struggle, OC puts everything on their shoulders. In his fourth start vs exotic looks, Book is forced to throw 32 times and rush 16 bc ND completely abandoned the running game. Kid can’t do it all himself! #NDInsider

— JMK (@JKreef) October 13, 2018

Overrated. #NDInsider

— steven mcqueen (@stevenamcqueen) October 13, 2018

Georgia is going to lose. ND is going to move up a spot in the rankings after that dumpster fire of a game. College football is the best. #NDInsider
