Pod of Gold: Examining international recruiting and star ratings

Next week’s National Signing Day will be rather uneventful for Notre Dame, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t recruiting topics to discuss. So Tyler James and Eric Hansen decided to cover a few different angles on the podcast this week. 

On Thursday, Notre Dame received a verbal commitment from Alexander Ehrensberger, a 2020 defensive end from Germany. In order to get some insight on the football scene overseas, we invited on former Irish quarterback Evan Sharpley, who spent some time coaching abroad in Italy and Germany with a program called Global Football. 

On the show, Sharpley discusses the football culture overseas, the development of players, the talent difference between Italy and Germany and Notre Dame's strategy in recruiting abroad. Sharpley also shares his thoughts on Notre Dame quarterbacks Ian Book and Phil Jurkovec and former quarterback Brandon Wimbush (:45).

Then Carter Karels joins the podcast to offer predictions with Tyler and Eric on the star-rating differences between Rivals and 247Sports within Notre Dame's 2019 class in the "Place Your Bets" segment (21:09).

Later, Tyler and Eric and answer questions from Twitter about the transfer market, new running backs coach Lance Taylor and more (50:40).
