12:01 | | [Comment From Mark, Notre DameMark, Notre Dame: ] After last night's game, do we see Auguste replacing any minutes Sherman may have been in line to get with Scott Martin out? Sherman, again, looked awkward and out of sync with the flow of the game and I would imagine Brey wasn't thrilled with the last easy basket he gave up.n | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:01 Mark, Notre Dame |
12:11 | | [Comment From Saint KnuteSaint Knute: ] any word or rumors yet on whom might be inducted into the ring of honor this year? | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:11 Saint Knute |
12:15 | | [Comment From Irish HoopsterIrish Hoopster: ] Has it seemed to you that Jack Cooley has been in a little bit of a fog the last few games? He just doesn't seem like himself. Any insight? | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:15 Irish Hoopster |
12:19 | | [Comment From RGRG: ] Was last night game a sell out? hard to tell from TV shots | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:19 RG |
12:21 | | [Comment From Mike in NJMike in NJ: ] Tom, great work keeping us informed on the team. On OOC scheduling, any idea why ND does not try for more teams like Evansville or GW instead of RPI killers like Chicago State or Kennesaw State? While all lumped together as 'buy' games, this has a big impact on RPI. | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:21 Mike in NJ |
12:28 | | [Comment From NDSIDNDSID: ] Any word on Eric Katenda? I thought he was going to be eligible after the first semester, and he already red-shirted last year, right? | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:28 NDSID |
12:30 | | [Comment From RGRG: ] I agree, I used to usher BB and never understood the rush, back in the day we had to put a chain up so people had to exit from the top. So sad with the effort they are putting on the floor. Go Irish | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:30 RG |
12:32 | | [Comment From Ryan, MishawakaRyan, Mishawaka: ] Cooley is getting killed on both sides of the floor, though lately not a lot of fouls have been called on the offensive side for Cooley. Normally this happens after a team or two continuously complains about a player. Have you noticed this or have you heard complaints during your travels about Cooley's play? | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:32 Ryan, Mishawaka |
12:36 | | [Comment From Mike in NJMike in NJ: ] Totally understand on return games, but there are hundreds of teams between the top mid-majors and the dregs of Division 1. For example this year, Evansville, GW, and Niagara all come to ND without return games. | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:36 Mike in NJ |
12:40 | | [Comment From Saint KnuteSaint Knute: ] It appears that the more physical approach to the game is bringing out the best in Jerian Grant, as his game seems to be a bit more aggressive. I liked the fact we won last night with Atkins contributing nothing. What do you feel needs to be done to get BOTH of them performing at the same level on a consistent basis? | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:40 Saint Knute |
12:43 | | [Comment From RGRG: ] Tom, one last thing on attendance are the women team drawing the same amount as men in attendance? | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:43 RG |
12:44 | | [Comment From Jim-- NYCJim-- NYC: ] Tom-- I believe that there is a tendency to overrate ND's guards. Atkins disappeared with Wright's game plan of getting into his grill defensively and being physical . That crucial turnover at the end reminded me of his turnover against Xavier. The only thing consistent with Grant is his inconsistency. The presence of DJ next year will give ND some room for error at the guard position. ND was fortunate that the misses of the front ends of the one and ones didn't loom larger. As many minutes as EA and JG play , consistent production is so important | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:44 Jim-- NYC |
12:46 | | [Comment From Mike from NJMike from NJ: ] Thanks Tom. Interesting that style of play is considered in OOC schedule. | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:46 Mike from NJ |
12:56 | | [Comment From RGRG: ] Great point, Thanks for your insight. Dont forget to watch Dr. Phil this afternoon. | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:56 RG |
12:57 | | [Comment From Jim-- NYCJim-- NYC: ] Tom-- your insight into style of play of OOC games is very astute. Having 6'9" guys chase small low Division I players is a worthless endeavor. | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:57 Jim-- NYC |
12:58 | | [Comment From Pete coto De cazaPete coto De caza: ] Concerned about the guards foul shooting at the end of games. Tell them to bend their knees, over the rim and follow through (sage advise from Adrian Dantley's coach at De Matha) | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:58 Pete coto De caza |
12:59 | | [Comment From Dave (Washington, DC)Dave (Washington, DC): ] Thanks again for the chat, Tom. Last night's game was great. They passed the ball well, guys were moving without the ball, bodies were on the floor...maybe Brey finally woke this team up. Have to say that Knight has suprised me. I thought he was a slow oaf but he brings a lot of energy to the team, not to mention a great mid-range J. | Thursday January 31, 2013 12:59 Dave (Washington, DC) |
1:00 | | [Comment From Irish HoopsterIrish Hoopster: ] Tom...please keep this a "lennay-free zone." | Thursday January 31, 2013 1:00 Irish Hoopster |
1:01 | | [Comment From Dave (Washington, DC)Dave (Washington, DC): ] Looking ahead (sorry Depaul), Syracuse looks like a matchup nightmare. They play a few 6-8, 210-220lbs athletic forwards that it's tough to see Connaughton and Knight guarding. Think Brey will play more zone on Monday? | Thursday January 31, 2013 1:01 Dave (Washington, DC) |
1:03 | | [Comment From KenKen: ] Have you heard anything more on when ND will move to the ACC? It's looking like ND will remain in the Big East next season. Is that correct? | Thursday January 31, 2013 1:03 Ken |
1:05 | | [Comment From SlofootSlofoot: ] What was disappointing is that Brey still didn't use his bench during the prep part of the schedule. When he dusted off Knight, it came as a huge surprise because he hadn't developed him earlier. Shouldn't he have used Auguste more with the "first 4" in those early games to get him used to playing with Cooley et al? | Thursday January 31, 2013 1:05 Slofoot |
1:09 | | [Comment From highheaterhighheater: ] Isn't it pretty sad that ND has to rely on the emergence of Knight as a second semester senior to save this season? | Thursday January 31, 2013 1:09 highheater |
1:20 | | [Comment From highheaterhighheater: ] So we need to get on our hands and knees hoping Knight comes back becuase Brey recruits one big every 4 years? We were very fortunate that Harangody and Cooley have developed. | Thursday January 31, 2013 1:20 highheater |
1:24 | | [Comment From Jack - ToledoJack - Toledo: ] Is there anything different that the Irish can do to be better prepared for postseason play? I know it is survival mode in BE play, but how do some teams step up their play in conference and NCAA Tourneys? | Thursday January 31, 2013 1:24 Jack - Toledo |
1:27 | | [Comment From Drowned and Frozen in SBDrowned and Frozen in SB: ] Why do Notre Dame followers continue to beef about Brey's idiosynchrasies when it comes to players minutes and development? He hasn't changed in 10 years and isn't going to. I wish we could just appreciate what he has done and continues to do with this program as a whole. I thought last night Brey handled the fluid game situations very well, especially pulling Sherman immediately after he played matador D on his man, and leaving the hot hand in with Beidsheid instead of Connington, then bringing C back in at the end for Defense. No question here, just a rant... | Thursday January 31, 2013 1:27 Drowned and Frozen in SB |
1:27 | | [Comment From EmeryEmery: ] Tom, Could it be, that last night, fans (many are IU and PU grads) were going home to watch Indiana vs Purdue on the tube? | Thursday January 31, 2013 1:27 Emery |
1:31 | | [Comment From traksiontraksion: ] Nice call on CB last night. It'll be fascinating to see whether the Irish mesh at any point w/out Martin. If they do, will Martin be back at any point if he is say, 80% healthy? | Thursday January 31, 2013 1:31 traksion |
1:34 | | [Comment From Jack - ToledoJack - Toledo: ] ND seems to steal a W on the road against a higher ranked opponent. Where do you see that coming this season? | Thursday January 31, 2013 1:34 Jack - Toledo |
1:37 | | [Comment From highheaterhighheater: ] Pardon me for bringing up the subject of recruiting bigs at a time when we are relying on a 2nd semester senior to replace a 6th year player to help us 'steal an NCAA bid'- Breys words not mine. Seems like exactly the perfect time to bring it up. | Thursday January 31, 2013 1:37 highheater |
1:42 | | [Comment From psisigmapsisigma: ] What has happened to Sherman? I thought he would have been a significant asset this year. | Thursday January 31, 2013 1:42 psisigma |
1:56 | | [Comment From Tal, Valley Center, CA.Tal, Valley Center, CA.: ] Tom, In your opinion, was last night a coming out party for C. Biedscheid? The guy clearly has the stroke but up to now, he's been so erratic and inconsistent. Will his stellar performance against Villanova vault him to another level? And along those lines, will Brey be more inclined to stay with him a while longer now that Cam has demonstrated he's got the potential to really go off? | Thursday January 31, 2013 1:56 Tal, Valley Center, CA. |
2:03 | | [Comment From highheaterhighheater: ] Well, we'll have to agree to disagree, because I think ND has been outmatched everytime they face two big and/or athletic frontline players. Syracuse, Uconn, Louisville, Villanova, Pitt .. all have sported bigs from outside this country. Paired with another athletic forward (see Florida Statein the NACCA) they present a matchup for which ND alsways struggles to answer. Even if you were satisfied with Harangody and Cooley as the only bigs that last 8 years, you are very vulanerable when they get injured. | Thursday January 31, 2013 2:03 highheater |
2:04 | | [Comment From BillBill: ] Does Mike Brey try to lose the game whenever we are up by 10 or less with 5 minutes to go? | Thursday January 31, 2013 2:04 Bill |
2:16 | | [Comment From BillBill: ] Last night we have the lead by 8 and we are on a run. We then decided to run the burn and Villanova gets let back into the game. | Thursday January 31, 2013 2:16 Bill |
2:20 | | [Comment From highheaterhighheater: ] Thats one nice single game counter example but don't you think the success of Uconn, Syracuse, Louisville, Pitt in the NCAA tournamant has something to do with the versatility in match-ups that is afforded by two bigs? Trying to navigate a 64-man field against various opponents requires you to beat very different teams. ND simply hasn't been as versatile in their approach and part of that is not having two bigs like the other Big East schools that have been much more successfull in the NCAA tournament despite only being marginally better than the irish in the regular season. | Thursday January 31, 2013 2:20 highheater |
2:33 | | [Comment From PeterPeter: ] Hi Tom, Does Brey bring Sherman back next year? I would think he would, but it might be temping to free up a spot. | Thursday January 31, 2013 2:33 Peter |
2:35 | | [Comment From GuestGuest: ] Just an FYI...we have the Harbowl Sunday and Grant v. Grant on Monday. Also, don't forget Boeheim guaranteed a victory over the Irish when he met with his boosters last summer. I read a news report of the game. BTW, guess I need to take back my reservations about Knight. No he is not the next Kevin McHale but he has played a lot better than I ever thought. Is he related to Christian Laettner? | Thursday January 31, 2013 2:35 Guest |
