Eric Hansen: Welcome to post-signing day, post-January drama, post-nasal drip version of Notre Dame football live chat. As always, please keep your hands flat on your keyboard and your feet flat on the floor. Please include your name and hometown with your question. Please, no swearing (not even at each other), no spitting, no wagering and no bare feet. And finally, please no 17-part questions or manifestos. With that, let's roll on.

[Comment From @NDTrooper81@NDTrooper81: ]Hey Eric, were you able to find out any info on if Ishaq makes a move to DE? also where do you predict Vanderdoes gets most of his minutes this year? as a back up DE or DT? When is BK's next presser? and also, now that Braxton Cave is gone, who holds the title in the weight room as the strongest?
Friday February 8, 2013 12:02 @NDTrooper81
12:07
Eric Hansen: Greetings, to you first question, I hope to find out about possible position switches later this month. I think Brian Kelly wanted to finish recruiting before seriously contemplating any of those. Now he knows what his roster will look like. I still think the move makes a lot of sense, both for the player and for the team. I'll keep you posted. As far as Vanderdoes, he can play inside or outside, but nose seems to be the best immediate fit. He could see minutes at Kapron Lewis-Moore's old position as well. I wouldn't think BK will have another presser until just before spring ball, though I hope to connect with him before then. King of the weight room now? I haven't researched it thoroughly, but my instincts tell me it's Stephon Tuitt.

[Comment From Bill from OhioBill from Ohio: ]Thanks for having a chat today.......was interested if there is any news on Bob Elliott? Hoping he is doing okay and will get a chance to be back on the field soon.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:08 Bill from Ohio
12:10
Eric Hansen: Bill, nice to hear from you. From what we've heard, the surgery went well. For those not following the story, ND safeties coach Bobby Elliott underwent surgery Wednesday. He was receiving a new kidney from his sister, who was the donor. I would expect the university to release a statement at some point. They are football sports information director-less at the moment, though.

Friday February 8, 2013 12:10 Steve From St Louis
12:11
Eric Hansen: Steve, thanks, glad to be back chatting with you. Much more fun the watching daytime TV for my Notre Dame football news. The book, I believe, ships this week. For those in the dark, the Awakening book is a South Bend Tribune publication that chronicles the 2012 ND football season. It's available on our website.

[Comment From mattmatt: ]Hi Eric love the chats....any updates to the jamoris slaughter situation?
Friday February 8, 2013 12:12 matt
12:14
Eric Hansen: Hey Matt, thanks. I talked to Brian Kelly about it Wednesday. They expect word any day on the appeal. The interesting thing about the appeals process is that the NCAA gives the case to a completely different set of eyes -- a board of conference commissioners and ADs, per BK, who then make the decision about a 6th year. The good news for Jamoris is that if he is rejected, he has been invited to the NFL Combine, where he can at least interview with teams.

[Comment From Mike from ValpoMike from Valpo: ]Love your chats. It seems every year someone from a recruiting class either leaves, transfers or goes on a mission, before the fall season. Is there anyone you see out of this class who will not be with Notre Dame in the fall.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:15 Mike from Valpo
12:15
Eric Hansen: Mike, thanks. I don't see that coming at all. There are no LDS kids, to my knowledge, in the class. And so many of the kids were committed for such a long time, I can't see someone wanting to transfer this early.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:15 Eric Hansen
12:16
[Comment From GuestGuest: ]Hi Eric, can't wait for your tell-all special with Oprah on the Manti story. Just kidding. Something that seemed to be brought up after the loss to Alabama was a lack of contact during bowl practices due to lack of depth and fear of injury. Do you see that being a factor this season now that o-line depth appears to be razor-thin even with the new croup of recruits?
Friday February 8, 2013 12:16 Guest
12:18
Eric Hansen: In all seriousness about daytime TV, I had never seen a Dr. Phil show from start to finish before. He was impressive. As far as physical bowl practices, you can never predict how hard a position group will be hit with injuries and defections, but I would think all things being equal, BK will want to have more physical practices. Offensive line numbers are up.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:18 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Scott from RaleighScott from Raleigh: ]Hey Eric - love the chats. Do you see any of the current running backs switching positions based on Greg Bryant and Torean Folston signing on?
Friday February 8, 2013 12:18 Scott from Raleigh
12:22
Eric Hansen: Scott, since Notre Dame has an offense now where running backs can blur with slot receivers and they like to use different formations for mismatches, I'm not sure there's a need. Cam McDaniel may have a better opportunity at corner, but that's just me speculating.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:22 Eric Hansen
12:22
[Comment From CecilCecil: ]Eric, for every 85 players ND recruits, most SEC schools are taking 110 and weeding out the weaker players. Can a school that doesn't oversign ever win a championship against these programs?
Friday February 8, 2013 12:22 Cecil
12:25
Eric Hansen: Cecil, I addressed oversigning and grey-shirting in an article earlier this week. The SEC instituted a rule a couple of years ago to address oversigning. I talked at length earlier in the week to 247sports' JC Shurburtt about those topics. He does not see blatant roster manipulating going on in the SEC any more. Now remember, ND can also manipulate its numbers a bit by waiting until after signing day to determine which 5th-year seniors it will invite back.

[Comment From Zach form SDZach form SD: ]Hey Eric. Even with KLM gone, do you see the defensive being an even better unit next season with, maybe, some younger and more athletic guys getting time?
Friday February 8, 2013 12:25 Zach form SD
12:26
Eric Hansen: KLM had a really nice season and is going to be missed, but I think the depth is much better next season -- with Vanderdoes, Jarron Jones, Chase Hounshell all being added to the mix.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:26 Eric Hansen
12:26
[Comment From Jerome from CincyJerome from Cincy: ]What about transfers from the soph, junior or senior class? Any rumblings?
Friday February 8, 2013 12:26 Jerome from Cincy
12:28
Eric Hansen: Jerome. I really haven't been hearing anything other than Andrew Hendrix being open to evaluating his situation at some point. I would imagine that will be after spring practice. Typically, if guys have enrolled for the spring semester, they're going to let spring practice play out before they consider making a move. Spring practice can sometimes alter a depth chart dramatically.

[Comment From Newt in Washington DCNewt in Washington DC: ]Hey Eric, I am so happy that we finished strong in our recruiting. Eddie Vanderdoes put an ! on the day with his commitment! First, do you think the Manti stuff had an effect on our game vs Bama? 2. Whats your super early prediction for next season? I cant see us going any less than 10-2. Mich, USC, and Okl all have new qbs. and 3. Is it bad that I want people to transfer to free up scholarships for 2014? Mesa, Hendrix, Walker, Williams, Moore, Utepo....We can really use the numbers. Love the chats!!!! Go Irish!!!!
Friday February 8, 2013 12:29 Newt in Washington DC
12:32
Eric Hansen: Newt, great to talk to you and sorry we didn't connect in Miami. They had the media up in Lauderdale, which I think was a fair distance from where you were. To your questions, I think it would be unfair to Bama to blame the Manti stuff on the outcome and only he knows the answer, but my best guess is it did weigh on him individually. Super early, I'll go 10-2. I never root from anyone to transfer, and you're strong enough -- based on your bench press numbers -- that it's probably not in my best interests to tell you what to do.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:32 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Sam from CharlotteSam from Charlotte: ]Eric, welcome back and thanks for chatting. What's the timetable for fifth years and your sense for Fox and Carlo? I see we've offered some WRs for next year, who are the top ranked WRs and do we have any shot at them? That's only four parts, so I hope I'm under the wire. Thanks again

[Comment From Mike D New Phila, OHMike D New Phila, OH: ]I know there is a lot of safety depth, but do you think Max Redfield sees the field this year? I think he could have the biggest impact of this class next year. Loved that pickup along with EV of course.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:39 Mike D New Phila, OH
12:40
Eric Hansen: Mike, I do think somehow, someway he plays in 2013. Kelly said the five guys with the best talent/opportunity quotient to play next season are Redfield, Jaylon Smith, Vanderdoes, Bryant and Folston.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:40 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Randy, Napa, CaRandy, Napa, Ca: ]What about the punter that was supposed to go to ND.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:40 Randy, Napa, Ca
12:42
Eric Hansen: He's a walk-on and won't be announced until he enrolls. His name is Andrew Antognoli. ND also has a walk-on kicker coming. Kelly can't comment on either one publicly until they enroll, because they did not sign letters-of-intent.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:42 Eric Hansen
12:42
[Comment From Ric from ElkhartRic from Elkhart: ]I'm sure I haven't heard all of the post-Bama sound bites, but I've heard BK referring to things like the weight room and “closing the gap.” Given circumstances in the Bama game such as the offensive game plan & play-calling (consistently going after the best safety?) and the ineffective defensive scheme (Barrett Jones referring to NDs scheme as very simple), has BK explicitly mentioned closing a potential gap in coaching/scheme in addition to just a gap in talent/strength on the player side of things?
Friday February 8, 2013 12:42 Ric from Elkhart
12:44
Eric Hansen: Ric, he actually did. On our radio show Wednesday night, he did bring that subject up, that from a coaching and schematic standpoint, the Irish were lacking there too. He also backtracked and said the overall gap wasn't as large as he originally had thought immediately after the game.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:44 Eric Hansen
12:44
[Comment From John - Grand RapidsJohn - Grand Rapids: ]What is your take on this cycle's preferred walk-ons?
Friday February 8, 2013 12:44 John - Grand Rapids
12:45
Eric Hansen: I've never seen them, but they sound like good safety nets. The punter does have a chance to earn a scholarship down the road if he performs.

[Comment From Kevin in IndyKevin in Indy: ]Eric, for the 2nd year in a row I've noticed Kyle Brindza booming the ball out of the end zone on kick-offs early in the season and barely making it to the 5-yd line by the end of the year. Supposedly he didn't have a tired leg last year, but this has now happened both of this year's handling kick offs. Have you heard anything about this? I liked the fact that in a couple of close games he could prevent any chance of a run back and make the other team start back at their own 25. Thanks.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:45 Kevin in Indy
12:46
Eric Hansen: Kevin, it's something I plan to ask Brian Kelly about as we get ready to start spring, especially given that Brindza will be adding the punting chores to his other duties in 2013. Good question. We'll get you an answer in March.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:46 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Mark, Orange Co, CAMark, Orange Co, CA: ]Hi Eric, Great to have a chat session. Now that BK has had a chance to build the team his way do you think we will see any significant differences in offensive stratagies next season?
Friday February 8, 2013 12:46 Mark, Orange Co, CA
12:47
Eric Hansen: I do. I think the running backs, given their skill sets, will be much more involved in the passing game. That would be the most noticeable difference. I also think they'll continue to develop and evolve Everett Golson as a threat in the running game.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:47 Eric Hansen
12:47
[Comment From josh, Crown Pointjosh, Crown Point: ]Just got on the website and was very excited to see the chat with Eric Hansen!! How much playing time do you see (my personal fav recruit) Jaylon Smith getting next season and what position?
Friday February 8, 2013 12:47 josh, Crown Point
12:49
Eric Hansen: Josh, good to talk to you. Jaylon's going to play. He is a drop linebacker. That's where BK wants him. The question is do you move Danny Spond, who did a great job last year, inside? Or do you tag-team those two? BK's not ready to commit to either scenario yet. My sense is if Jaylon is ready, you move Spond inside and he'd be really good there.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:49 Eric Hansen
12:49
[Comment From Tom ChicagoTom Chicago: ]Hi Eric, in my opinion ND is missing a game breaker at the wide receiver position, was wondering what your thoughts are on Davonte Neal making an impact at that position this upcoming season?
Friday February 8, 2013 12:49 Tom Chicago
12:50
Eric Hansen: There's no question about your observation, but there are those who believe Neal, Chris Brown and/or DaVaris Daniels will mature into that kind of player. They certainly have the speed to do so. They have to be more complete, and DD is the furthest along there.
Friday February 8, 2013 12:50 Eric Hansen
12:51
[Comment From Reggie IndianapolisReggie Indianapolis: ]Hi Eric, will the QB position be wide open this spring/ fall and if Golson is the starter do you see Kiel leaving for a chance to start else where!
Friday February 8, 2013 12:51 Reggie Indianapolis
12:53
Eric Hansen: I think it's Everett's job to keep/lose, and that he has earned that. Beyond that, I think Nos. 2-5 are fluid. Gunner is going to have to earn a promotion from No. 4 on the depth chart. He knows that. As to whether he'll transfer, he indicated in January that hasn't crossed his mind. Will it cross it in the future? Only he knows. As Brian Kelly said the other day, elite players aren't afraid of competition if they're truly elite players.

[Comment From Harald PützHarald Pütz: ]Hi, Eric ! This is Harald Pütz. Greetings and best wishes from Bonn, Germany. Still sad about our NC loss:-( What about our chances to reach (an win) a BCS bowl game next sesason ? Always enjoying your chat, Eric !
Friday February 8, 2013 12:54 Harald Pütz
12:56
Eric Hansen: Harald, Willkommen zum Chat. I do think ND will get to the BCS level in its final year of existence, but I have a feeling they won't get to the title game. Thanks for jumping on board.

[Comment From Chris from DallasChris from Dallas: ]Eric, Coach K and staff have put 2 successive strong classes together, and the depth is as strong as I can ever remember. What are priorities for next year's class?
Friday February 8, 2013 12:56 Chris from Dallas
12:58
Eric Hansen: My opinion is a speed receiver is the one ingredient missing. After that, you've got to replenish the defensive line. Nix and Tuitt could both be gone after this year. You still need a dynamic player to replace Fox/Calabrese at weakside linebacker. In fact, insider linebackers period should be a priority. Beyond that cornerbacks and offensive linemen are the biggest needs as I see it.

[Comment From Len Hanlock, Los Altos CALen Hanlock, Los Altos CA: ]Eric, when does ND need to identify the 85 scholarship players who will make up the 2014 roster? Can they change the individuals during the season? Len
Friday February 8, 2013 12:58 Len Hanlock, Los Altos CA
12:59
Eric Hansen: Once school starts in August, the 85 are locked in -- even if someone transfers subsequently.

[Comment From Roger, TexasRoger, Texas: ]Eric, thanks for doing this chat. Off topic perhaps, but what do you know about the BCS playoff committee? Do they still plan to publish a weekly top 20 ranking starting wtih week six? I haven't heard much about that lately.
Friday February 8, 2013 1:00 Roger, Texas
1:01
Eric Hansen: Roger, I believe I saw it reported they're still working on it, but the number 18, I believe, came up as far as the number of people on the committee. When I get back from vacation, I plan to touch base with Jack Swarbrick and update in a story just where that all stands. Good question, just don't have specifics for you yet.
Friday February 8, 2013 1:01 Eric Hansen
1:01
[Comment From Terry ODonnellTerry ODonnell: ]Hi Eric, Any chance that ND will ever schedule annual games - such as a single game each season - against SEC teams? That might improve our chances when we meet such powers as Alabama, LSU etc in bowl games. Any thoughts? Thx
Friday February 8, 2013 1:01 Terry ODonnell
1:03
Eric Hansen: I like your idea. And that is something, I believe, Jack Swarbrick is considering too -- now how do you fit that in to an already crowded schedule with 5 ACC teams on it, beginning in 2014? That's the challenge. Perhaps some of the future Shamrock Series games can feature SEC teams. Again, I like the way you're thinking.

[Comment From The Dude, Columbus, OHThe Dude, Columbus, OH: ]Any chance we get a dedicated/new special teams coach? You know they do allow you to return punts...
Friday February 8, 2013 1:04 The Dude, Columbus, OH
1:05
Eric Hansen: They do? I don't think that will happen. BK was convinced ND's special teams problems were more a product of faulty personnel than coaching last season. He was confident this class would address that. We shall see.
Friday February 8, 2013 1:05 Eric Hansen
1:07
[Comment From David in the AdirondacksDavid in the Adirondacks: ]In your experiences, how often does it happen when an active Irish player tries to dissuade a recruit from coming to ND in fear of completion? How are players chosen as hosts?
Friday February 8, 2013 1:07 David in the Adirondacks
1:07
Eric Hansen: Wow, I've never heard of that. That would be funny, sad and weird all at the same time. As far as who gets to be hosts, I need to ask Tony Alford and BK how they choose them to be sure, but my sense is they usually get younger guys on the team to host, guys who will be around for most of the prospect's career.
Friday February 8, 2013 1:07 Eric Hansen
1:07
[Comment From John from HoustonJohn from Houston: ]Your "post-January drama" comment at the beginning of this chat is apt. With the recruiting class now signed, are we finally status quo ante bellum or do we need to await the first win of the season?
Friday February 8, 2013 1:07 John from Houston

Friday February 8, 2013 1:10 Bill in NC
1:11
[Comment From Tom from ChicagoTom from Chicago: ]Eric, one more question. With the recruiting changes, it appears to me that coaches are going to have a hard time saving themselves from themselves (i.e. constantly making calls, texts, etc all hours of the day). Not to mention the athletes being constantly harassed. Do you foresee this "wild west" version of recruiting sticking around for a long time or do you see the rules being curtailed?
Friday February 8, 2013 1:11 Tom from Chicago
1:13
Eric Hansen: Tom, it's hard to predict. The ones who seem to be the "victims" if you will are the kids. If that is the case, I would expect there to be some sort of correction.
Friday February 8, 2013 1:13 Eric Hansen
1:13
[Comment From IsaacIsaac: ]Eric, In the wake of the Manti Te'o saga, will you and the "Tribune" be putting additional safeguards, or be more diligent with existing safeguards, regarding fact-checking, source-checking, obtaining new sources, etc.? All things considered nationally/globally, it appears the "Tribune" has lost credibility.
Friday February 8, 2013 1:13 Isaac
1:16
Eric Hansen: Isaac, fair question and here's my answer. Before the Manti Te'o saga, my goal every day as a journalist was simple: Never stop learning and be better today than I was yesterday. The Manti Te'o saga doesn't change that. If you feel the Tribune has lost credibility, you're certainly entitled to that opinion.

[Comment From Josh from OrlandoJosh from Orlando: ]Hey Eric, love the chats. BK has more or less "blamed" the punt return woes on thin depth chart issues. Is this the year that unit finally turns the corner?

Friday February 8, 2013 1:17 Pete Coto de Caza, CA
1:18
Eric Hansen: Unless I hear differently in the coming weeks, it's Scott Booker. As we get closer to spring, I'm sure BK will address special teams. Given how frequently is has come up in the past 3 minutes, I think that's a safe bet.
Friday February 8, 2013 1:18 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Kip from QatarKip from Qatar: ]Eric, couldn't be happier about the incoming class. EVan was a HUGE get since Nix and Tuitt will probably be gone next year. I think of all the recruits, Greg Bryant will be the biggest difference maker. I am not sold on GA3. He might just need some more touches but I can see Greg and Amir stealing the show. Any chance Corey Robinson ever becomes a TE with the ability for him to grow. he would need a ton of weight room work but could be lethal in the RZ.
Friday February 8, 2013 1:19 Kip from Qatar
1:20
Eric Hansen: Thanks Kip. By the way, if you want to be reminded what snow looks like, click on the weather part of our website. As far as Corey Robinson, he's an intriguing guy in part because he may not be done growing. TE could be in his future, but not in his immediate future.

[Comment From Greg - South Bend.Greg - South Bend.: ]Hey Eric! Do you think Brian Kelly will dedicate a full time recruiter coordinator? And are you surprised that none of the assistants got head coaching jobs?
Friday February 8, 2013 1:20 Greg - South Bend.
1:22
Eric Hansen: I'm not surprised Martin and Diaco stayed at ND. They really like it here and are in no hurry. They're also both in position where they can be selective. They don't have to take a hopeless rebuilding situation to get a head coaching job. ... Kelly is studying the new rule. It would seem to make some sense to promote someone already in his office, that's not a coach, into that position, freeing up Tony Alford to do what Tony Alford does best.

[Comment From tnt65 - Atlantatnt65 - Atlanta: ]Eric,Thanks for doing this chat so far out from the season/s. Interested in how you think Manti treated you as far as the story goes. It seems to me that he was pretty consistent, and to those who think he should have said something in early Dec. -- it appears he didn't know what to believe.
Friday February 8, 2013 1:23 tnt65 - Atlanta
1:25
Eric Hansen: Not sure I understand the first part of your question -- how Manti treated me? Here's what I'll say about Manti. If he's the honest, faith-driven, benevolent person he was portrayed before all of this happened, it will play out in the future that is still is that person. If he's not, then that will come to light. I don't think a leopard changes his spots. And I do believe Manti will do good things on the field and off at the next level.

Friday February 8, 2013 1:26 Dan Makowski
1:28
Eric Hansen: CB Bennett Jackson and LB Dan Fox each underwent shoulder surgery and won't have contact during spring practice but are both expected to be available for fall camp. Lo Wood and Collinsworth are expected to be back. Tate Nichols appears to be headed for a medical hardship.

Friday February 8, 2013 1:28 S Robinson From Fishers IN
1:30
Eric Hansen: In talking to recruiting analyst Tom Lemming, he thinks these new rules favor teams like Notre Dame -- and Alabama, Ohio State, etc. The rich get richer. I'm still not sure what to think. I see some big positives and some big negatives.

[Comment From Etienne, MontrealEtienne, Montreal: ]Eric, who do you see competing for the safety positions next year? Elijah Shumate was a promissing safety in the last recruiting cycle... anybody else?
Friday February 8, 2013 1:30 Etienne, Montreal
1:32
Eric Hansen: Etienne. It will be interesting to see if Shumate stays at cornerback after being moved there in the fall. The numbers would seem to suggest that. If Slaughter is back, he, Collinsworth, Farley and Redfield would seem to be the guys at the top of the depth chart come late August. There are a lot of options and bodies there. And remember, Farley came almost out of nowhere to push aside players with more experience and acclaim.

[Comment From Matt ND Prairie ViewMatt ND Prairie View: ]I'm sorry I missed the begining. What is going to happen to Gunner Kiel?
Friday February 8, 2013 1:33 Matt ND Prairie View
1:34
Eric Hansen: The same thing that happens every week -- I get asked if he's going to transfer and I try to answer that question. In March and April, he'll be trying to move up the depth chart, and I think he has a good chance to do that.

[Comment From Josh from OrlandoJosh from Orlando: ]I honestly believe that BK is the right guy for ND and I'd hate to see him leave. I know he said his interview with the Eagles was just intrigue on his part but do you see it becoming a yearly exercise of NLF teams pursuing him and how long will BK be able to hold out before the lure of the NFL challenge becomes to great?
Friday February 8, 2013 1:34 Josh from Orlando
1:35
Eric Hansen: I have to say, Josh, I don't know. I don't think that question can be answered definitely until it comes up again after next season. If BK, quickly pushes NFL offers aside, then that's the end of it for a while. If he lets them fester, then we're probably looking at an annual event.

[Comment From Steve from upstate nySteve from upstate ny: ]Hey Eric, thanks for chatting! Assuming Welch is able to play, how do you see the tight end depth chart shaping up, and do you anticipate fewer instances of multiple tight ends on the field at the same time?
Friday February 8, 2013 1:36 Steve from upstate ny
1:37
Eric Hansen: Hey Steve, I expect ND to continue to use mulitple tight ends, especially if Troy Niklas is as dynamic as they believe he can be. I see Niklas as the top of the depth chart. Welch and Koyack are at the next level. Then the two freshmen, Heuerman and Smythe will battle to get into the mix.

[Comment From KevinKevin: ]Hey Eric, thanks as always for the way you go about these chats - they are a pleasure. My question is who do you believe to be the sleepers or guys you truly think are underrated (basically your personal favorites) of the recruiting class? Thanks, as always!
Friday February 8, 2013 1:40 Kevin
1:43
Eric Hansen: Kevin, thank YOU. Four guys who intrigue me are: CB Rashad Kinlaw, WR William Fuller, OG John Montelus and WR James Onwualu. Kinlaw has been hurt a good chunk of his HS career. When healthy, he was a dynamic player. Fuller may have been underrecruited. The guys who have seen him play really like his speed. Montelus is a beast with a defensive lineman's butt-kicking attitude. Onwualu can do a lot of things and I just have a good feeling about him.

[Comment From Joe - MichiganJoe - Michigan: ]Given the number of smaller stature but speedy offensive players now in the fold (Carlisle, Neal, Folston) and Brian Kelly's friendship/respect for Chip Kelly, do you see the future offense being a little more like Oregon?
Friday February 8, 2013 1:44 Joe - Michigan
1:45
Eric Hansen: I don't think BK ever want to completely commit to that, not with the way ND can recruit tight ends, etc. I think BK wants to be able to play fast when he wants to and powerfully when he wants to. And he's building a roster that reflects that desire.

Friday February 8, 2013 1:45 MIke from North Liberty

Eric Hansen: I think some of that depends whether Spond is moved. Councell may also be an option at defensive end. He's a really good athlete. This spring will be important for him.

[Comment From Lou in South BendLou in South Bend: ]Eric, (1) you handled the situation with the fake girlfriend quite well, especially the scrutiny of your own writing; will that saga impact the way that you work? (2) on the radio before the big game, you and most of the others picked ND in a squeaker -- what did you overlook, and what will you look for this season to gauge improvement? Thank you for bearing with all of the drama...
Friday February 8, 2013 1:47 Lou in South Bend
1:48
Eric Hansen: Lou. Thanks. As I mentioned before, I try to learn from every experience, good, bad or indifferent. That will continue. As far as the prediction, this is why I don't have my own psychic hotline. I got swept up in the destiny story line, even though I knew and spoke to Alabama being the better team. Another lesson learned.

Is it me or is anyone paying attention to early enroller Malik Zaire? I will be honest I have started to sleep on him myself until recent. Listing to his interview and looking at his skill set, this kid is truth! Goolson needs to watch out this kid means business! No knock to Gunner. What is your opinion on Malik?

Eric Hansen: Tyler James from our staff has seen him play in person and was really impressed. I like his confidence and his skill set and the fact he id unfazed by the competition at his position. I think he has a future at ND.

[Comment From BobBob: ]Thanks for the chat, Eric. Once again, it looks like everyone overlooks Tommy Rees. Is there any reason to think he doesn't give us the best chance to win if Golson goes down, given what he did this past season ? Now if Golson was to miss significant time, then maybe you re-evaluate.
Friday February 8, 2013 1:51 Bob
1:52
Eric Hansen: I think spring ball is going to answer that question better than you or I can. Rees' experience is valuable, whether or not he plays, because he helps the QBs on the sideline, like a coach. Whatever his role is, he's a good guy to have on the roster.

Friday February 8, 2013 1:52 RC - Phoenix
1:54
Eric Hansen: ND's depth is so good, there's a chance none of them will -- but lots of them will play. As I mentioned earlier, the five with the best chance at first glance are Redfield, Vanderdoes, Jaylon Smith, Bryant and Folston.

[Comment From JD, OhioJD, Ohio: ]What do you see as the biggest question mark heading into spring? I think most people would say leadership on D with KLM and Teo gone, but I think Nix will fill that void nicely.
Friday February 8, 2013 2:02 JD, Ohio
2:03
Eric Hansen: I think Nix will do a great job with that -- as will Slaughter if he's back. I think the biggest question is at middle linebacker. Is Jarrett Grace the guy? No. 2, who steps up out of those numbers at WR and claims the playing time with TJ Jones?

Friday February 8, 2013 2:03 Steve - Chicago

[Comment From BighurtJaxBighurtJax: ]Eric, also who is going to be the next Manti? It seems like they like what they see in Deeb, but will he be ready to compete this Fall as a true Frosh? Will it be Grace and Moore battling for this spot in the Spring? Whats your take?
Friday February 8, 2013 2:04 BighurtJax
2:05
Eric Hansen: Grace seems like the first option. Moore is a guy who really hits hard but need to be more complete in the passing game. They could play Fix and Carlo together. You might also see Spond move inside. Spring will give us that answer. I don't think Deeb will be ready, Anzalone would have been in the mix had he stayed in the class.

[Comment From Michael in AZMichael in AZ: ]Hi Eric, Thanks for all your efforts here. Thrilled with the 2012 season, the Irish did get some fortunate breaks and the schedule proved not to be the murderer's row it appeared to be (preseason). Swami, can the Irish get a BCS berth & win in the last year of its existance? Are you happy to see the four-team playoff come to CFB in 2014 and can this be anything but good for ND?
Friday February 8, 2013 2:06 Michael in AZ
2:07
Eric Hansen: Michael, I have been stripped of Swami status after my championship game prediction, but I do see ND going 10-2 and getting to the BCS. I really like the new format and it's good for ND as well. We have to wait another year for it, however.

[Comment From chris in San Diegochris in San Diego: ]Eric, you are the best. Thanks. Can you help me understand how a recruiting class is ranked? I see ND as having the best class of all, given the strength of the talent at really crucial positions, yet the "experts" seem to disagree. What are they judging by?
Friday February 8, 2013 2:07 chris in San Diego
2:09
Eric Hansen: Chris, each service seems to have a different way of calculating classes, usually based both on raw numbers but also how many stars each recruit has. Now remember, no matter how well you recruit, player development is a huge part of things. Really the best indicator of how good a class is relates to how well that school filled its needs. ND seemed to do a very good job of that.

I see a future Golden Tate! 3rd and long against Temple late in game one and we bring Vanderdoes, Ishaq (from his DE spot) and Jaylon off the edge full throttle for a sack!! Goosebumps! With Vanderdoes agility and ball get off do you think they will keep him at his weight for D-Line versatility or add some bulk to make him more of a space eater/run stuffer like Nix?
Friday February 8, 2013 2:10 Kip Qatar

Friday February 8, 2013 2:11 jay
2:13
Eric Hansen: From everything I hear about him, he is likely to live up to the hype, in large part because he's talented, he has a high motor and comes off as a very mature kid. All of that helps keep you off the bust--o-meter.
