Live Chat:Talk Notre Dame basketball with Tom Noie(04/11/2013)

[Comment From BenBen: ]  Do you see Demetrius Jackson starting next to eric grant next year?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 11:56 Ben

[Comment From Tom, Brownsburg, INTom, Brownsburg, IN: ]  Wow, Tom the response to the chat is overwhelming. Everyone else on line must be an ND student. How do you see the front court shaping up next year?
Thursday April 11, 2013 12:16 Tom, Brownsburg, IN

[Comment From Tom, Brownsburg, INTom, Brownsburg, IN: ]  Tom, I have lost track of Luke Harangody since the Cavaliers cut him. What is he up to now? D-league? Should we just switch to private chat?
Thursday April 11, 2013 12:34 Tom, Brownsburg, IN

[Comment From Gary ToledoGary Toledo: ]  Tom, Thanks for the coverage as always. What do you make or J Grant? That was an amazing minute of scoring vs. Louisville in the 5OT W, but frankly his development and inconsistent play was puzzling for his talent level and his production his 1st year. I guess we should hope the improvement comes in the next 2 seasons.
  Thursday April 11, 2013 12:41 Gary Toledo

[Comment From GuestGuest: ]  My view on Zack Aug. next year is play him good or bad until he figures it out. His up side is so much higher than tom or sherman that I would be willing to live with his mistakes. I feel the same with Jackson. Play them right out of the gate and hope they peak at the tourney. Isnt this what Izzo has done recently?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 12:47 Guest

[Comment From Moe GreenMoe Green: ]  Tom,watching the tournament this year, I noticed a physicality that Notre Dame does not possess. Do you think there will be an off season concentration in the weight room for Sherman,Knight,Auguste, and Biedshied?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 12:50 Moe Green

[Comment From MattMatt: ]  Idid not watch the ACC this year much. what kind of style difference should we expect to see this year. I am assuming a less physical approach but with the Beg East guys coming in do you think the current acc members will have to adjust?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 12:54 Matt

[Comment From PetePete: ]  Do you think ND will target any transfers this off-season?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:00 Pete

[Comment From Gary ToledoGary Toledo: ]  Grant has the physical tools to get to the NBA. Let's hope he learns from Scott's bad decision to leave with a year of eligibility left! Hopefully, D Jackson's arrival will raise Atkin's and Grant's games next season (especially postseason!) Some of those turnovers vs. ISU were shocking.
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:01 Gary Toledo

[Comment From MattMatt: ]  afollowup on my Izzo reference. I think Mike Brey is a smart guy and great coach. I think he is smart enough to adjust when he sees he's beating his head against the wall. If its broke then fix it. give up a few games in the early season and go for it down the line. I sensed Mike was very depressed at the finish and I expect him to reinvent himself a bit going into a new leaugue
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:06 Matt

[Comment From DanDan: ]  It seems like the best 5-man lineup involves 4 guards (if counting Connaughton as a guard) and Auguste. Would you agree?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:07 Dan

[Comment From wadelitewadelite: ]  I know the March results are part of it, but do you believe part of the attendance apathy is that for the most part the team plays a boring style of hoops. It sure would be nice to see some tight MTM defense on the perimter that could lead to run outs in 13-14 now that there are more than 2 legit SS guards. PS: Pitino inserted a walk on in both final 4 games to give his guards a rest- we would never see that Brey.
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:09 wadelite

[Comment From wadelitewadelite: ]  Not sure if ND can target any transfers this off-season as I am quite sure they are maxed at 13 scholarships. IIRC Brey has never had the full amount on a roster, came close about 4 seasons ago and then Harden transferred.
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:12 wadelite

[Comment From Rich from RochesterRich from Rochester: ]  It just says alot about our program when our best players can't stick on an NBA roster. Not blaming anyone but when can we get that one difference maker on campus that wants to change the fortunes of a stagnant program?
Thursday April 11, 2013 1:13 Rich from Rochester

[Comment From GuestGuest: ]  Does ND have the front court depth to contend nationally next season?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:16 Guest
Tom Noie:  Contend? Yes. Go deep in the NCAA tournament? Probably not, but let's see how Knight and Sherman and Auguste and Burgett advance their games.
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:16 Tom Noie
[Comment From TrevorTrevor: ]  Does Connaughton have any other arrows in his quiver? I see what Hancock did and Albrect did so I understand the value of having that shooter, but I think PC has more to give. What do you think? One dribble as a FR, 3 as a SOPH... will he have more leach as a JR?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:17 Trevor

[Comment From MadisonMadison: ]  I can't wait for DJax to get here. Having an option to put in there when Grant starts throwing the ball all over the arena will be a godsend.
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:19 Madison

[Comment From Rich from RochesterRich from Rochester: ]  In reference to Grant I think we may have expected too much. We are not used to athleticism on the squad and when we see it we go overboard. On some teams he would be the 4th or 5th most athletic guy, but here he stands out.
Thursday April 11, 2013 1:20 Rich from Rochester

[Comment From Baseball GuyBaseball Guy: ]  Elephant in the room - Connaughton becomes draft elig. for baseball in June 2014. Was Vasturia recruited with this in mind or will they be beating the bushes looking for another 3 point shooter?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:22 Baseball Guy

[Comment From wadelitewadelite: ]  Do you know of any 2014 recruits who will be at the Blue Gold game. I know in the past it has been part of a recruiting weekend for hoop prospects. Also, have you heard that Brey promised Atkins he would play the entire game and he would not recruit PG's the last couple seasons. Quite reckless if that is the case.
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:24 wadelite

[Comment From TomTom: ]  What is next for Brooks?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:26 Tom

[Comment From GuestGuest: ]  No member of this team could be counted on to consistently give this team anything. They all disappeared not for minutes, but for handfuls of games at a time. I've never seen anything like it. With the talent on the roster, that is the coach's fault. And in the tournament, they choked again. I noticed Beilein's coaching turned WV into a championship contender right under ND's nose. Why wasn't he hired, or even considered? I noticed he plays young talent.
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:27 Guest

[Comment From MadisonMadison: ]  Could the Irish get away with Atkins-Jackson-Grant-Connaughton-Auguste for extended stretches next year?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:29 Madison

[Comment From MikeMike: ]  Being able to watch every single ND game either on tv or the computer has really spoiled me. Are the ACC games televised nationwide as much as the Big East was? I really didn't see them being offered but then again I wasn't looking.
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:31 Mike

[Comment From MadisonMadison: ]  As a loyal twitter follower, I thought you were a little rough on the Big Ten Network with regards to the Zeller "decision"
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:32 Madison

[Comment From Pete Coto de Caza, CAPete Coto de Caza, CA: ]  Is Jackson a good free throw percentage shooter?
Thursday April 11, 2013 1:36 Pete Coto de Caza, CA

[Comment From wadelitewadelite: ]  You raised an interesting point earlier by saying it seems quite likely that Grant will not play his 5th. Well if he does that we are down to just legit guards again in 14-15 and I have read there is no interest in 2014 guards. Is there a recruiting strategy or is just hope and pray that no one gets hurt. CBB is a guards game and Michigan safe guarded last season about Burke leaving early by signing a one star PG recruit. If Grant is likely gone after 13-14, then a 2014 guard is needed (not that complicated).
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:37 wadelite

[Comment From SaintKnuteSaintKnute: ]  Did you get a preview of "Reinvention: Notre Dame Men's Basketball Blueprint for Success"? If so worth the time to view?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:40 SaintKnute

[Comment From SamSam: ]  Did I miss something - Is Connaughton leaving as next season?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:42 Sam

[Comment From Rich from RochesterRich from Rochester: ]  I do believe Katenda will be the X factor in the upcoming season. Length and protecting the rim could be his forte. We will need that in the frontcourt.
Thursday April 11, 2013 1:44 Rich from Rochester

[Comment From Gene in NYGene in NY: ]  Tom - thanks for the coverage and the chats. I have a non-ND related hoops question. Kentucky, coming off a subpar year, had two seniors on the roster, and it's doubtful any underclassmen can feel comfortable with the usual "one-and-done" mentality. How is it then that they have top rated class with 7 new recruits coming in? And, how is it they avoid the NCAA sanctions that UConn had?
Thursday April 11, 2013 1:46 Gene in NY

[Comment From wadelitewadelite: ]  Tom- my point about guard depth in 14-15 was not about trying to sign a top 100 recruit, but depth in general. I was referencing Michigan bringing in Spike Albrecht last spring (the guy who scored 17 in the first half of the NC game). Only DJ and Vasturia are legit guards if Grant leaves after 13-14. ND took a flyer on Torres who may not see the court for 3 seasons, I am sure there are some 2-3 star combo guards who have the grades who would welcome the opportunity to accept an ND hoop SS.
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:49 wadelite

[Comment From Uncle MikeUncle Mike: ]  I wouldn't worry about DJ's "red flag" - in the all-star game, mindset was totally different than it would be in a regular game. DJ would know to keep it in the flow of an offense if there was any chance of getting the ball back - that wasn't going to happen at the McD's! He will finish strong when the time is right.
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:51 Uncle Mike

[Comment From SaintKnuteSaintKnute: ]  To objectively analyze a program's strengths & weaknesses and find ways to utilize those strengths and minimize the weaknesses in order to find a way to compete in the ACC cannot be a bad thing. Your thoughts?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:53 SaintKnute

[Comment From wadelitewadelite: ]  Uncle Mike is right about hoop all star games- no one plays hard enough to put them in a position to get hurt. The only fear is that the other team has a cheap shot artist like Dwyane Wade.
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:56 wadelite
Tom Noie:  Ouch. D-Wade on line one for you. Still insists breaking Kobe Bryant's nose in AN ALL-STAR GAME was an accident. LOL
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:57 Tom Noie
[Comment From SmittySmitty: ]  Speaking of Albrecht, it seemed like Michigan had 3 or 4 guys that went to HS within an hour of ND... Albrecht, Glenn Robinson, and McGarry come to mind. I'm not too familiar with basketball recruiting, but were any of these guys on ND's radar?
  Thursday April 11, 2013 1:57 Smitty

[Comment From wadelitewadelite: ]  How hard of a recruiter is Brey? I read where Izzo's team won their round of 32 game on a Saturday afternoon in Detroit and he was in MN later that night to watch a recruit in a state finals game.
  Thursday April 11, 2013 2:06 wadelite

[Comment From wadelitewadelite: ]  From all reports McGary's HS transcripts make Shawn Kemp's look like Abro's.
