Live Chat: Talk Notre Dame football with Eric Hansen(04/15/2013)
Eric Hansen:  Welcome to the spring-football-is-almost-over version of Notre Dame Football Live Chat. We're going uptempo, as Brian Kelly's offense has been known to do this spring, so please no manifestos or 17-part questions. Per usual, no biting, swearing, wagering, bare feet or fighting. PLEASE INCLUDE your hometown with your question. Off we go.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:01 Eric Hansen
[Comment From TN-BOBTN-BOB: ]  How has GA3 looked in practice so far, my biggest problem with him is that he seems to run too upright and is brought down easily. Has he added any size?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:02 TN-BOB
Eric Hansen:  George Atkinson III has had a real good spring. He's up to 217 pounds on a 6-2 frame. His biggest improvements this spring are in the receiving game and running with a lower pad level. So that's good news for you. He still has to be reminded to run with that lower pad level, but he's making good progress.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:04 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Blaise, WestlandBlaise, Westland: ]  Should we be worried, that the recruiting front has been oddly quiet this year compared to last year?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:04 Blaise, Westland
Eric Hansen:  I'm not sure I'd consider it quiet. Remember, this is going to be a smaller class than last year's, even with some attrition lately on the roster. I think ND is well-positioned, but some of the kids they're recruiting are not going to make early decisions.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:06 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Mike, AustinMike, Austin: ]  Does Hendrix look poised to finally become the back up?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:07 Mike, Austin
Eric Hansen:  Not based on practices to this point. He has an incredibly quick release and a strong arm. He brings a lot to the running game, but his command of the offense doesn't match the two guys ahead of him, Golson and Rees. Rees, for his limitations physically, has built up quite a bit of trust and equity with the coaching staff/
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:08 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Terry, JacksonvilleTerry, Jacksonville: ]  Thanks for these Chats Eric, Love them
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:08 Terry, Jacksonville
[Comment From Terry, JacksonvilleTerry, Jacksonville: ]  oops, here is my question... IS there someone on this team that can finally become a difference maker at WR
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:08 Terry, Jacksonville
Eric Hansen:  Thanks for being a part of them, Terry. DaVaris Daniels has made some real strides toward that end this spring. TJ Jones has shown improvement and complements DD well. The wild cards are CJ Prosise and running back Amir Carlisle. Prosise is a big, physical receiver with some giddy-up in the slot. He needs to keep coming, but he's been the pleasant surprise of the spring. Carlisle can do so much in both the running and passing games -- if he can stay healthy. He really has a quick burst.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:10 Eric Hansen
[Comment From GuestGuest: ]  Matt (Sand Flats, NY) Her Eric -- what are we looking at from from the WR corps, most notably some of the early enrollee WRs and also some young guys that may or may not have gotten a lot of time last season?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:11 Guest
Eric Hansen:  The two freshmen who are in camp now are Corey Robinson and James Onwualu. Corey looks like a guy, at 6-5, who might be able to help in the red zone. James brings a lot of versatility to the position. He can block, he can run reverses, he can catch, but he's not as polished as the people in front of him. Torii Hunter Jr. and Will Fuller are the two guys coming in June. Both of those guys are fast. Hunter was really impressive in the camp/7-on-7 circuit, but he's coming off the broken leg. I'd say both are short-term question marks, but long-term rate very well..
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:15 Eric Hansen
[Comment From HV FANHV FAN: ]  How big of a " NEED " is J. Peppers for next recruiting class?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:16 HV FAN
Eric Hansen:  He's certainly a guy who could get in the mix as a freshman cornerback. If he ended up at ND, I'm fairly confident Brian Kelly might do a cartwheel. rates him as the nation's top CB and No. 2 player overall regardless of position.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:17 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Michael (Atlanta)Michael (Atlanta): ]  Appears starting WRs will be Daniels, Jones (spending a lot of time in the slot?) and Daniel Smith. I know Smith has good size but what else does he bring to the table?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:18 Michael (Atlanta)
Eric Hansen:  I'm not sure I agree with your lineup. I think Prosise has a very good chance to start if he keeps progressing. We didn't get to see any of Daniel Smith this weekend. He was held out for precautionary reasons. I've always liked him when he's been healthy. He's tall, has a really good vertical and can block well. For him to get more time in the rotation, he's got to be more consistent with his receiving and he's got to stay healthy.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:20 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Mike570Mike570: ]  eric, im going to keep saying this, Greg Bryant should redshirt, as long as Carlisle is healthy i cant ssee him getting enough touches to warrant burning a year of eligibilty. agree?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:20 Mike570
Eric Hansen:  I'm not sure Bryant projects as a 5-year player. I think he can help you this year, even if Carlisle is healthy -- and that's a significant "if" at this point. I'll reserve judgment until I see him in August, but my sense is my answer won't change.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:21 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Jeff W-Dowagiac, MIJeff W-Dowagiac, MI: ]  Based on how Coach Kelly danced around the question and a drill I saw in practice, I think the odds are better than 50/50 that we run some pistol this season. What are your thoughts?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:22 Jeff W-Dowagiac, MI
Eric Hansen:  To me, it didn't seem like he danced. He kind of swatted the question away. Having said that, Ault did spend time with the coaching staff, outside his speaking time. I would not be shocked if they dabbled in it. I had a chance to take in Ault's speech at the clinic. I don't think ND would want to commit to it full-time, but sprinkling it in, conceptually might make sense for their personnel.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:24 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Fro - Marco IslandFro - Marco Island: ]  Will we see anything different with the hollowed grounds inside ND Stadium this fall? New Turf? Field Turf? I thought 2012 was the last year for the old pasture? After the Spring Game is over what does one Eric Hansen do until August?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:24 Fro - Marco Island
Eric Hansen:  I think we will have an answer shortly. I plan to address that with Jack Swarbrick soon. They will have to either put in Field Turf or a new natural turf field for 2013, so you are correct about the timing. As for boring, old, me, I'll be doing NFL draft stories over the balance of April after the spring game, editing shifts and working on our 2013 Notre Dame Football Annual in May and June, vacation in July and anything else that comes up in between. Oh and mowing my lawn.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:26 Eric Hansen
[Comment From GuestGuest: ]  Is Notre Dame having a tough time adjusting their schedule to fit in the five ACC games per season?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:27 Guest
Eric Hansen:  Only in the sense Arizona State does not want to lose its 2014 home game, which the Irish want to cancel.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:27 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Dan, Ft. LauderdaleDan, Ft. Lauderdale: ]  Any word on who will be filling the Director of Player Personnel vacancy on Coach Kelly's staff?
Monday April 15, 2013 1:27 Dan, Ft. Lauderdale
Eric Hansen:  Brian Kelly was asked about it Saturday. There's a very good candidate internally and several from the outside. Tim McDonnell was really good at what he did, but I think they'll find a really good replacement.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:28 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Juan, Los AngelesJuan, Los Angeles: ]  I've heard great things about Shumate and Farley this spring.. How do you think the coaches will handle the safety position once Refield makes it to campus?
Monday April 15, 2013 1:28 Juan, Los Angeles
Eric Hansen:  Juan, I think Redfield is going to see the field. Now how much, I can't tell you yet, but they're excited about him. Suddenly, even with Slaughter getting denied a sixth year, there is some really good depth at that position. I can see Farley,.Shumatre, Baratti, Collinsworth and Redfield all making contributions.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:30 Eric Hansen
[Comment From JakeJake: ]  Eric, what's your 'way too early prediction' for the 2013-2014 season?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:30 Jake
Eric Hansen:  Way too early is the operative word. I am predicting 10-2, with a BCS trip but not to the title game. Now snark away.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:31 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Ken, MichiganKen, Michigan: ]  What is the format for this year's blue/gold game... offense vs defense scrimmage like last year?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:32 Ken, Michigan
Eric Hansen:  Ken. we'll get that info on Wednesday, so keep an eye out for it on our website. My sense is it will be similar to last year's, just based upon limited personnel at certain positions.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:33 Eric Hansen
[Comment From HV FANHV FAN: ]  When can we see ND play again at Yankee Stadium?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:33 HV FAN
Eric Hansen:  It may happen again in 2015. Stay turned.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:33 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Matt in PhillyMatt in Philly: ]  What is the latest on BK's contract? Any word on the hold up?
Monday April 15, 2013 1:34 Matt in Philly
Eric Hansen:  I don't see anything sinister there. Recruiting kind of melted into spring football. After spring seems about right. That's another thing to put on my checklist with AD Jack Swarbrick -- thanks.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:35 Eric Hansen
[Comment From rk Scanlon Weston, FLrk Scanlon Weston, FL: ]  Hi Eric..Great having these chats back. I have always been intrigued by the math of recruiting. How many offers does a school like ND extend to end up with 18-22 signed players?
Monday April 15, 2013 1:36 rk Scanlon Weston, FL
Eric Hansen:  it varies from year to year, but 100 or more is about right. There's a real art to slow-playing the players lower on your priority list and knowing when to move on from someone you really have no chance to get.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:37 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Roger, DallasRoger, Dallas: ]  I'm a bit confused. I keep hearing how the roster is deep throughout, but I'm also reading articles about how thin the O line and WRs are. What's your assessment?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:37 Roger, Dallas
Eric Hansen:  The offensive line is thin on experience, not necessarily numbers. Remember you add in four more guys in June. However, your third tackle right now is a redshirt freshman. Your backup guards and center have either no or very little actual game experience. Wide receiver seems thinner, because of spring injuries and the departures of Neal and Ferguson. Remember, they'll get two more bodies in the fall. Again, most of the backups have very little or no experience even though the raw numbers are fine.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:40 Eric Hansen
[Comment From JakeJake: ]  Hey Eric, two questions... 1) Depth concerns aside, what starting group is the strongest and what is the weakest? 2) Is Jarron Jones going to be making a significant impact in every game or is he going to be fighting to get on the 2-deep?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:40 Jake
Eric Hansen:  OK, you missed the 17-question limit by 15, so you're good. I think from pure starters, no depth concerns, I like the defensive line, followed by running back. Weakest? That's a tough one when you remove depth concerns. I'd say the tight ends have the most work to do.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:43 Eric Hansen
[Comment From GuestGuest: ]  Manti Teo brought tramendous leadership to the football team. Who will fill that void? James in Indianapolis?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:43 Guest
Eric Hansen:  He did indeed. I would say on offense, Zack Martin, Everett Golson and TJ Jones. Defensively, Nix (in an unconventional way), Prince Shembo, Bennett Jackson.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:44 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Al from PhillyAl from Philly: ]  Great to have you back, Eric. From the practices you've seen how will the right side of the O-line compare to last year?
Monday April 15, 2013 1:44 Al from Philly
Eric Hansen:  It could be better. Conor Hanratty is the key. Lombard at RT is a year, stronger, smarter better. Hanratty is a physical run blocker who will be tested in the passing game. I think Nick Martin at center is going to be better than a lot of people think. He is really making a good early impression. Thanks for being a part of this today, Al.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:46 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Mike in PhoenixMike in Phoenix: ]  ASU says 2014 game is still on. Most experts predict a buyout by ND to get out of contract Yet another bad PR move by ND, in light of how they've handled it. Agree?
Monday April 15, 2013 1:47 Mike in Phoenix
Eric Hansen:  I think we've only heard one side of the story. Perhaps the ASU game can be postponed to another year rather than canceled. We'll see how the PR looks when all is said and done.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:48 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Gondj- UP of MIGondj- UP of MI: ]  Hi Eric- What is your take on the Kiel transfer? I've been reading very good things about Zaire so far, and wondering if it made him it fair to say that he didn't have the stomach and/or skill set to compete?
Monday April 15, 2013 1:48 Gondj- UP of MI
Eric Hansen:  My take is I hope Gunner finds a home in Cincinnati. He's a really good kid, who I think gets confused by a lot of the voices around him. He -- or those around him -- seem to want guaranteed playing time, and perhaps Cincy will bring that to him. He certainly has the skill set to be a successful college quarterback. The mental part of the game and how he handles outside influences will make or break him.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:51 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Mike in PhoenixMike in Phoenix: ]  The biggest game of the year for ND is __________?
Monday April 15, 2013 1:51 Mike in Phoenix
Eric Hansen:  at Stanford to end the regular season.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:51 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Mike-DCMike-DC: ]  Does not seem like ND is in on too many of the elite recruits. Maybe something to do with the tough academics? Have any predictions for the RB's Hood or Sony M, who are set to announce soon. Thanks - great job
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:52 Mike-DC
Eric Hansen:  Mike, I'm bad at predicting what I'll have for breakfast, let alone what a 17-year-old is going to do next, and I had two of my own to practice on. I do think ND is in the mix for several elite prospects, some of who just visited this past weekend.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:53 Eric Hansen
[Comment From JakeJake: ]  Is the staff ready to let Chris Brown impact every game or will we only see him in minimal situations since he's behind a very deep WR core, at least on the front-end.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:53 Jake
Eric Hansen:  Chris needs to show he can be physical, that he can block, that he can run routes besides the deep ones. In other words, he needs to be more complete, and he's working toward that end. He even turned down the opportunity to compete as a triple-jumper for the Irish track team to work on his football this spring. And he is a premier triple-jumper. This summer is very important to Chris Brown in terms of his place in the rotation next fall.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:55 Eric Hansen
[Comment From GuestGuest: ]  Eric - can I request an off-season story? I've been wondering how the ND coaching staff manages their recruiting from an IT perspective. What tools do they use to keep track of recruit's interests, family situation, and the number and methods that they contact them? It seems like they need a dedicated software solution to track all of that, especially for compliance reasons.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:55 Guest
Eric Hansen:  Great idea. If they are willing to share that info, I'm willing to do the story.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:56 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Skid Row from IllinoisSkid Row from Illinois: ]  Who will be doing the honors of envieling The Shirt? Thanks!
Monday April 15, 2013 1:56 Skid Row from Illinois
Eric Hansen:  You know the wardrobe questions are my weakness. My guess would be Brian Kelly. I know it won't be me.
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:56 Eric Hansen
[Comment From NDtrooperNDtrooper: ]  Eric, do you see Justin Utupo continuing to play over Jarron Jones all year?
  Monday April 15, 2013 1:57 NDtrooper
Eric Hansen:  They are on different sides right now -- Utupo on Tuitt's side and JJ the old KLM position, which Sheldon Day has taken over. Whoever asked about JJ earlier, forgive me. He is a really good athlete who played against really bad competition in high school. His learning curve is steep, but he's committed to it. I can see him playing a handful of downs situationally this fall, primarily against the run. How that compares to Utupo's playing time? I'm not sure. The guy I think will play more than both of them is incoming freshman Eddie Vanderdoes. He can play inside and out.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:00 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Clancy from SheboyganClancy from Sheboygan: ]  Tommy Rees deserves consideration as one of the Captains this year, even though he clearly won't start. What do you think the early favorites or Captains are???
Monday April 15, 2013 2:00 Clancy from Sheboygan
Eric Hansen:  It depends how many and who picks them. Last year the coaching staff did, not the players. If it's the coaching staff, I'll go with Z. Martin, Golson, Bennett Jackson, Prince Shembo -- maybe Louis Nix.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:01 Eric Hansen
[Comment From NeilNeil: ]  any guess on how many recruits that they will take and the breakdown as to how mant at each position. What positions are they most concerned with filling.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:02 Neil
Eric Hansen:  Neil. I don't have time to give you the detail you want in a chat. I am sure Tyler James will be writing about that. As an overall number, I would say 17-20 given the recent defections.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:04 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Larry, Columbus, OHLarry, Columbus, OH: ]  Welcome back!! Really missed these chats. What true and redshirt freshman/freshmen do you see having the biggest impact this season?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:04 Larry, Columbus, OH
Eric Hansen:  Hey Larry. True freshmen, I'll go with Greg Bryant (RB), Eddie Vanderdoes (DL), Jaylon Smith (OLB) and Max Redfield (S). Redshirts: C.J. Prosise (WR), Romeo Okwara (OLB), Ronnie Stanley (OT). Stanley is considered a medical redshirt, by the way.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:07 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Mike from MDMike from MD: ]  Any chance Stanley replaces Lombard at RT? How does Nick Martin and the rest of the O-line look?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:07 Mike from MD
Eric Hansen:  There is a chance Lombard could kick inside and play RG with Stanley at RT. BUT, if you do that true freshman Steve Elmer becomes your third tackle and true freshman Mike McGlinchey becomes your fourth. As far as Nick Martin, he is smart, athletic, strong, learns fast. There's a lot to like there.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:09 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Dorothy from South BendDorothy from South Bend: ]  Do you think any of the ND guys except Te'o and Eifert will be drafted or will they all wind up as UFA's?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:09 Dorothy from South Bend
Eric Hansen:  Hi Dorothy, none of them will go as early as Manti and Tyler, but Cierre Wood, Theo Riddick, Zeke Motta, Braxston Cave and Kapron Lewis-Moore (even injured) have a shot. I think the guys who will sign free agent contracts will be Golic, Goodman, Cowart, Turk, Salvi, Slaughter and Toma
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:13 Eric Hansen
[Comment From ron from vegasron from vegas: ]  What's the word with Mahone is he the next Jonas Gray?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:13 ron from vegas
Eric Hansen:  He's got an uphill climb to be Jonas. GA3,, Carlisle and Bryant are going to be ahead of him. Perhaps Cam McDaniel and Folston too. Jonas didn't blossom until late in his career, though, so who knows?
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:14 Eric Hansen
[Comment From GuestGuest: ]  Jim,Cumberland,md Hi Eric Why not utilize Hendrex as a running Back who also can pass the ball when needed for trick plays.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:15 Guest
Eric Hansen:  To be truly a trick play, Hendrix would have to play running back full-time to make the trick work, and that's not going to happen. He has done some holding on place kicks this spring, so perhaps that's where some of the trick could come from.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:16 Eric Hansen
[Comment From JakeJake: ]  Eric, thanks for the answers. Chris Brown or Jarron Jones, who has a better sophomore season?
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:16 Jake
Eric Hansen:  Chris Brown.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:16 Eric Hansen
[Comment From STEVE , LansingSTEVE , Lansing: ]  Eric , luv your chats. Will Kevin Carr #67 see field this year ?
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:17 STEVE , Lansing
Eric Hansen:  Perhaps on Senior Day late in the game.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:17 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Mark, Orange countyMark, Orange county: ]  Hi Eric, great to have a live chat. Who will be returning punts this coming season? Will their be moreproduction in special teams
Monday April 15, 2013 2:18 Mark, Orange county
Eric Hansen:  I'll start with the second part of that first. Kelly has been true to his word. In the practices I've seen, there are many more starters in the return and coverage units, which should give them a boost. My best guess at this point is the punt returner will be Carlisle or Prosise, but they're looking at more than just those two right now.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:20 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Mike from MDMike from MD: ]  How is punt return looking? Who will be the starting punter?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:20 Mike from MD
Eric Hansen:  Right now Kyke Brindza is Plan A to do the punting, place kicking and kickoffs. Wake Forest transfer Al Wulfeck could step in if Brindza can't handle all three.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:22 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Chicago MurphChicago Murph: ]  Hello, Eric. Every year there is a recogniton, seemingly, that our kick return game is awful, matched by explanations, promises to fix it, and different coaching approaches to the kicking game. What , if anything, is being done this spring to address it, and do you expect improvement?
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:22 Chicago Murph
Eric Hansen:  As I mentioned a couple of questions ago, Kelly addressed the personnel issues by taking a page from Alabama and using starters. That's a priority. Scheme needs to be looked at too. I do think ND has dynamic enough players as returners, so my expectation is that the return game will improve.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:24 Eric Hansen
[Comment From James, DallasJames, Dallas: ]  Eric, why do you seem optimistic about GA at running back? I thought he was "light" last year between the tackles, especially against the better defenses. He had a couple of breakout runs against weaker teams. I am hoping the unknown Carlisle shows more than GA. Bryant will contribute, but he is a freshman. You see running back as a strength with the loss of two NFL prospects and GA as the main horse? Doesn't sound right to me.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:24 James, Dallas
Eric Hansen:  Well James, you are discounting that GA3 isn't the same running back we saw int he second half of last season, are discounting the speed Carlisle brings, which is superior to the two backs who graduated and are underestimating, I believe, the impact Braynt can have. When Carlisle was healthy and a freshman in USC's camp, there were many who considered him the top option at that position even then. There are those who feel Bryant will bring the same kind of buzz this fall. I'm just going by what I have seen; James, and I'm sure you'll expect me to buy you a beverage if I'm wrong.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:28 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Marty in EugeneMarty in Eugene: ]  Alabama players called the Irish defense simple and predictable. Do you expect Diaco to add some complexities this season?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:28 Marty in Eugene
Eric Hansen:  In a bowl setting with a long layoff, yes.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:28 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Chris from G RapChris from G Rap: ]  Too bad BK will be gone to the NFL after this year. Who's next in line? Fitzgerald from NU? Stoops? Diaco?

Eric Hansen:  I'm predicting Brian Kelly will be here in 2014.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:29 Eric Hansen
[Comment From TomTom: ]  suggestion from Tom in West Virginia. Don't know it its legal, but how about moving spring game to fall, kind of like pro pre-season game and match frosh & sophs vs. upper-classmen.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:29 Tom
Eric Hansen:  I'm not sure what the team would gain from that, and they are free to scrimmage during August in any format they'd like. I'm just not sure they would choose that one.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:30 Eric Hansen
Eric Hansen:  I did blow that. He is not a redshirt. So scratch him from my answer. He actually played in every single game. Sorry for the brain cramp.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:32 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Drew from GVSUDrew from GVSU: ]  Im pretty sure Romeo Okwara played in at least 3-5 games. How is he a redshirt then?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:32 Drew from GVSU
[Comment From HV FANHV FAN: ]  I dont like that Brian Kelly gave up play calling duties...your thoughts?
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:32 HV FAN
Eric Hansen:  I'm still not sure he won't backtrack on that. I will believe it if he repeats it in August. But Chuck Martin's history of calling plays is very impressive.

[Comment From Doug from CanadaDoug from Canada: ]  Based on all of the draft boards I have seen, Teo seems to have dropped out of the 1st round. What would cause so many teams to sour on him (and please don't say catfishing)?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:33 Doug from Canada
Eric Hansen:  Doug, what draft boards are you looking at? He's actually been on the rise on most. Mel Kiper thinks a team may trade up into the top 15 to get him. I would be shocked if he lasted until round 2, and so would a lot of other people.

[Comment From GVSUChrisGVSUChris: ]  Eric....what's the word with Chris Badger? With ND deep at safety, I haven't heard his name at all. As he changed positions? LOVE the chats! Thank you!
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:35 GVSUChris
Eric Hansen:  We have a nice contingent from GVSU today. He is really facing a numbers game right now. Great kid, great attitude, but I would be shocked if he sees significant playing time this year.

[Comment From Boris, Hamburg GermanyBoris, Hamburg Germany: ]  If you compare the 2012 spring to the 2013 spring, which team would get the advantage?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:36 Boris, Hamburg Germany
Eric Hansen:  The offense would get the advantage this spring. The defense would get the advantage last spring, although I think this still can be and will be a really good defense in the fall.

[Comment From Pat Hephill from Wilmington, DelawarePat Hephill from Wilmington, Delaware: ]  Eric, first time participitant, thanks for letting me in. Ths is probably for the AD but have you heard anything more about the"field turf" possibility for next season and with the other major colleges adding luxuary boxes, d you see that as a possibility at Notre Dame Stadim? Thanks!
Monday April 15, 2013 2:38 Pat Hephill from Wilmington, Delaware
Eric Hansen:  Welcome aboard, Pat. I hope to have a FieldTurf answer in the coming days/weeks. My sense is it's coming. As far as luxury suites, I don't see that on the horizon, but if they chose to, Michigan could provide the blueprint for them.

[Comment From GVSUChrisGVSUChris: ]  Eric....haven't been to a Blue and Gold Game since 1989. Thinking of bringing the kids down to watch. After the game do they still allow the fans on the field for autographs and pictures with the players?
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:39 GVSUChris
Eric Hansen:  Email me Chris, and I'll try to get an answer for you in the next couple of days.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:40 Eric Hansen
[Comment From GuestGuest: ]  Eric, taking into consideration Amir's injury, is your money on Proise being the #1 slot to start the season?
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:40 Guest
Eric Hansen:  That's where I am leaning.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:40 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Marty, San Antonio, TXMarty, San Antonio, TX: ]  Eric, Thanks for the time as always. It seems Cam McDaniel is doing really well and showing what a hard worker he is. Any chance he'll get more carries this year? I'll be at the game Saturday. See if Ara can stop the rain for us. Thanks!
Monday April 15, 2013 2:41 Marty, San Antonio, TX
Eric Hansen:  I hope Ara can stop the COLD for us. It's supposed to be a high of 47, so bring your jacket. Ara is going to be on campus Saturday. I believe he'll be celebrating his 90th birthday a few weeks early. Cam McDaniel's role will expand if Carlisle is not healthy. Even then, I expect him to get a few more touches, but there's a lot of competition at his spot.

[Comment From Mike from MDMike from MD: ]  Any concern that BK's acknowledged gain in players' weight will translate to slower players?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:43 Mike from MD
Eric Hansen:  Not concerned at all.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:44 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Ryan from MDRyan from MD: ]  Does Tyler Stockton finally see the fiel this season or is he buried at every DL position?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:44 Ryan from MD
Eric Hansen:  I don't see him playing in high-leverage situations.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:44 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Lenay from PretendvilleLenay from Pretendville: ]  Do you see Smith starting week 1 over Spond? He should, and do you see Vanderdoes, Bryant, and Redfield all starting at sometime during the season?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:45 Lenay from Pretendville
Eric Hansen:  I am still not sure how they will work Jaylon Smith in, but I know he'll play sometime, somewhere. I"m not sure if they will kick Spond inside now, given the strong spring Jarrrett Grace has had. And Spond played the drop backer as well as anyone so far in the Kelly Era. I'll have a better answer in August. Of the other three, I think Bryant has the best chance to start (outside of injury reasons), but I'm not sure any of those guys will start in 2013. I do think they will play a lot, though.

[Comment From ReggieReggie: ]  What does Jarron Jones need to do to see the field this Fall? Strength?
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:47 Reggie
Eric Hansen:  Understanding the defense and being more aggressive top the list.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:48 Eric Hansen
[Comment From norm fr canadanorm fr canada: ]  Welcome back... whats your prediction for the starting saftey slots?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:48 norm fr canada
Eric Hansen:  Farley is a given. Shumate if he gets all the calls, shifts, etc. down. Baratti if he doesn't. I would not rule out Collinsworth, but he has some catching up to do.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:49 Eric Hansen
[Comment From Leather Helmet, Snohomish, WALeather Helmet, Snohomish, WA: ]  Eric, is there a flaw in the recruiting process that allows ND to acquire players who come in injured, and stay that way forever? Or just bad luck?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:50 Leather Helmet, Snohomish, WA
Eric Hansen:  I'm not sure I understand your question, but injuries are a part of football everywhere. That's why you build depth.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:51 Eric Hansen
[Comment From MorvanMorvan: ]  How do the recent defects affect the onfield team?
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:51 Morvan
Eric Hansen:  Minimally if at all.

[Comment From mike thorold onmike thorold on: ]  Eric glad your chats are back. How has isahaq looked. And who is gonna play inside line backer.
Monday April 15, 2013 2:51 mike thorold on
Eric Hansen:  Hey Mike. Ishaq has had some big moments. He has dabbled at defensive end a bit, and looked good there too. The inside linebackers will come from the group of Grace, Fox and Calabrese. I still haven't written off Spond moving, but it seems less likely.

[Comment From Bill from Lafayette, INBill from Lafayette, IN: ]  Hi Eric. Great to have the question and answer format back.I think you do a great job and your insights are spot on. My question. Were you surprised by Kiel's departure, and why do you think the other players left ND?
Monday April 15, 2013 2:54 Bill from Lafayette, IN
Eric Hansen:  The Kiel question is harder. I saw all the signs of his support system sniffing around other schools and just couldn't wrap my head around that he'd actually leave BEFORE spring, which is a red flag. But he did. I thought he'd at least compete in spring to see where he stood. Neal says he is leaving to be closer to his infant daughter. Ferguson hasn't stated his reason. He was buried on the depth chart, but sometimes when players leave school mid-semester, they don't have the choice of staying. I'm not saying that's the case with Ferguson, but it's possible.
  Monday April 15, 2013 2:57 Eric Hansen
Eric Hansen:  That's going to have to do it today. Thanks for all the great questions and sorry for the ones I couldn't get to. I have an interview to do in two minutes. We'll try to do this again next week sometime between the Blue-Gold Game and the draft.
