JUCO RB Jeremy Smith previews weekend visit to Notre Dame
Because of the unique circumstances surrounding the recruitment of running back Jeremy Smith, the junior college running back has yet to receive an official offer from Notre Dame.
But, if everything were to work out and that offer were extended …
“It’s a strong possibility if I get an offer there I might go there,” said Smith, who said that Notre Dame has asked for his transcripts and which classes he is taking. Smith said he has had contact with some smaller schools, but to this point it’s been just talk.
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Smith also said that he would enroll at ND in January and would be eligible to play in 2015. He would have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Smith's potential future at Notre Dame should become clearer this weekend. He is taking his finals this week at Fresno City (Calif.) College and will travel to South Bend on Friday for the program’s annual awards show/banquet. Smith is being recruited by Irish running backs coach/recruiting coordinator Tony Alford.
Smith would add immediate punch to a backfield depth chart that returns just two scholarship players next year — uniors-to-be Tarean Folson and Greg Bryant. Notre Dame also has a commitment from high school senior Josh Adams, who is expected to sign in February.
Smith played this season at Fresno City College after being lightly recruited out of Hammond (La.) High Magnet School. Smith said because there was low interest, his father found Fresno City. He ran for 1,735 yards, including 375 in one game.
“I ended up having a good year at Fresno,” he said. “I’m a power back with speed.”
