Notebook: Notre Dame busy with new 2016 offers
As Notre Dame’s new coaching staff comes together, the Irish will refocus their efforts on the 2016 recruiting class.
One of the first waves of new offers to 2016 prospects came this week. The first offer came on Monday and was followed by four more on Wednesday. Here’s a closer look at the five recruits reporting new Irish offers:
DB Joejuan Williams, 6-2, 195; Nashville (Tenn.) Father Ryan: The four-star recruit reported an offer from the Irish on Monday. Notre Dame joined a list of more than two dozen schools who have already offered Williams. SEC powerhouses Alabama, Auburn and LSU are all on his list.
Williams made 48 tackles, broke up 11 passes and caught two interceptions in his junior season at Father Ryan. His school hosted the Irish for a practice before the Music City Bowl in December.
Rivals ranks Williams as the No. 8 safety and No. 89 overall in the class. 247Sports slates him as the No. 18 cornerback and No. 211 regardless of position.
QB Jarrett Guarantano, 6-4, 200; Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic: The four-star prospect reported a Notre Dame offer Wednesday. Nearly 30 schools have already offered scholarships to Guarantano including Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Rutgers.
Guarantano completed 97 of his 153 passes for 1,163 yards and 14 touchdowns in seven games as a junior. He also rushed for 547 yards and five touchdowns. His season was cut short with a broken wrist.
Rivals ranks Guarantano as the No. 4 dual-threat quarterback and No. 91 regardless of position in the class. 247Sports slates him as the No. 5 pro-style quarterback and No. 106 overall.
ATH Mecole Hardman, 5-11, 170; Elberton (Ga.) County: The four-star recruit reported an offer from the Irish on Wednesday. Hardman’s list of nearly 20 offers includes Georgia, Auburn, and Clemson.
Hardman played quarterback and some cornerback in his junior season. In seven games, Hardman rushed for 946 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also completed 23 of his 44 passes for 407 yards and three touchdowns.
Rivals ranks Hardman as the No. 6 multi-positional athlete and No. 98 regardless of position in the class. 247Sports slates him as the No. 21 cornerback and No. 231 overall.
CB Roderick Campbell, 6-0, 180; St. Louis Chaminade: The three-star prospect reported a Notre Dame offer Wednesday. The Irish became the eighth school to offer Campbell and joined the likes of Duke, Louisville and Northwestern.
Campbell’s athleticism stood out at last summer’s Irish Invasion camp. He went on to record 40 tackles and six interceptions in his junior season at Chaminade. Rivals ranks Campbell as the No. 28 cornerback in the class.
CB Troy Warner, 6-2, 180; San Marcos (Calif.) Mission Hills: The Irish became one of three schools to offer Warner on Wednesday. New offers from Notre Dame, Utah and Washington State joined Boston College and BYU as his five offers so far.
Warner, who played cornerback and wide receiver as a junior, intercepted eight passes last season. 247Sports slates Warner as a four-star prospect, the No. 5 cornerback and No. 92 regardless of position in the class. Rivals rates him as a three-star recruit and the No. 25 cornerback.
Top 10 for Gardner
One of Notre Dame’s top cornerback targets in the 2016 has shown mutual interest in the Irish. Four-star recruit Chauncey Gardner named Notre Dame one of his top 10 schools Wednesday.
The 6-0, 190-pound cornerback from Cocoa, Fla., listed the Irish alongside Florida, LSU, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Florida State, Penn State, Louisville and Miami as his top choices.
Gardner made 49 tackles and three interceptions as a junior at Cocoa High, the same school that produced Irish running back Tarean Folston. Rivals ranks Gardner as the No. 2 cornerback and No. 71 regardless of position in the 2016 class. 247Sports slates him No. 19 at the position and No. 215 overall.
