Notre Dame wanted size in its secondary. Donte Vaughn will bring it to the Irish.

Vaughn, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound cornerback, announced his verbal commitment to Notre Dame on Monday, his 18th birthday, on Twitter.

The addition of Vaughn gives Notre Dame 16 verbal commitments in the 2016 recruiting class. Vaughn joins cornerback Julian Love and safeties Jalen Elliott, D.J. Morgan and Spencer Perry in the secondary.

Rivals rates Vaughn as a four-star recruit and the No. 18 safety in the 2016 class. 247Sports slates him as a three-star prospect and the No. 32 cornerback.

CBS Sports Network recruiting analyst Tom Lemming called Vaughn an impressive athlete who could play either safety or cornerback.

"He has the range," Lemming said. "He's a very fluid athlete, instinctive, aggressive and tough. He's the kind of ball player who could wind up playing on Sundays."

Vaughn's speed — a reported 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash — could allow him to stay with wide receivers on the outside.

"He's very flexible. He has excellent body control and balance which would mean he could stay at corner and he has really good speed," Lemming said. "He's something that Notre Dame has not had in a long time — a big corner, like a Todd Lyght type of guy."

Notre Dame emerged as the clear leader for Vaughn following three visits in a four-month span. He first visited South Bend in June with some of his Memphis (Tenn.) Whitehaven teammates. He returned to Notre Dame in July and for the season opener in September.

Notre Dame beat out a number of SEC programs in Vaughn's commitment. Earlier in his recruitment, Vaughn listed Notre Dame alongside Tennessee, Texas A&M, LSU, Ole Miss, Auburn, Missouri and Mississippi State as his top eight schools.
