Linebacker Drew White gives Notre Dame commitment
The fire keeps on burning.
Notre Dame’s torrid football recruiting streak continued late Monday night.
Linebacker Drew White announced his verbal commitment to the Irish a little more than an hour after defensive tackle Kurt Hinish did the same. White shared the news on Twitter.
"Proud to say I have committed to The University of Notre Dame," White wrote.
White, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound junior at Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas, becomes commitment No. 8 in Notre Dame’s 2017 recruiting class. He joins Hinish and linebacker David Adams as the third defensive commit.
White received an offer from Notre Dame on Saturday while visiting for junior day. The Irish have landed four commitments — Hinish, Adams and quarterback Avery Davis — since then.
"This Notre Dame visit was cool," White said on Sunday. "It really opened my eyes to Notre Dame.”
As a junior, White recorded 101 tackles (52 solo), 12.5 tackles for a loss, three sacks and five blocked punts. He chose the Irish over offers from Michigan, Ohio State, LSU, Arkansas and Wisconsin.
247Sports slates White as a three-star recruit and the No. 10 inside linebacker in the 2017 class. Rivals rates him as a two-star recruit.
White attends the same high school, a traditional Catholic powerhouse in Florida, as Notre Dame wide receiver Corey Holmes. The school has sent a number of players to South Bend in the past including offensive linemen Sam Young and Dan Wenger, punter Ben Turk, long snapper Jordan Cowart and wide receiver Bobby Brown.
White's older brother, Sean, started five games at quarterback for Auburn this past season.
Notre Dame's coaching staff made a strong impression on White.
“It was pretty much the total package with academics, football and the tradition,” White said Sunday. “I really liked the coaching staff. I got to meet with all the coaches – (defensive coordinator Brian) VanGorder, (linebackers coach Mike) Elston, (running backs coach Autry) Denson.
"They really have a good Florida connection with Denson coming from Broward County and VanGorder was coaching down in Florida at one point. That was really cool. And I got to meet with Brian Kelly. He’s an awesome guy.”
