Four-star wide receiver recruit Kevin Austin previewed his visit to Notre Dame for the Blue-Gold Game in an interview with ND Insider.

• WR Kevin Austin, 6-3, 198; Coconut Creek (Fla.) North Broward.

ND Insider: What made you want to get on campus for a Notre Dame visit?

Austin: “They’ve were recruiting me pretty hard, (running backs) coach (Autry) Denson and (wide receivers) coach (DelVaughn) Alexander. They were saying getting up here to see the facilities, see the campus and talk to the academic advisers would be a great opportunity for me to really see what Notre Dame’s all about.”

NDI: What are you looking forward to seeing and getting to know the most about Notre Dame?

Austin: “The academics and what they offer with majors and everything like that.”

NDI: Is there a certain field that you’re interested in studying?

Austin: “I’m still contemplating between three which are kinesiology, engineering and business.”

NDI: In terms of football, what’s your knowledge base of what Notre Dame has to offer you?

Austin: “Coach Alexander has been telling me he needs a playmaker on the field as a wide receiver and someone that can stretch the defense and help the running game. He said I would fit in perfectly in that system.”

NDI: What is it about coach Denson that has allowed you to develop a relationship with him?

Austin: “He’s been down here in this area. He grew up not even a couple miles from where I grew up. I really have a great feel for him because if I choose to go to Notre Dame, he’s been through that situation. He picked Notre Dame and didn’t stay down here in South Florida. That’s someone I can look up to and any questions that I have, he can answer them.”

NDI: What’s your relationship with coach Alexander like?

Austin: “He wants to come see me in the spring. He’s talking about how I can really help the offense and all the recruits that are coming in as wide receivers. We can really be something special.”

NDI: Notre Dame is going to have a lot of commits on campus this weekend. Have any of those guys reached out to you?

Austin: “Yes. (Wide receiver) Braden Lenzy and the quarterback (Phil Jurkovec).”

NDI: What other schools have you visited this spring?

Austin: “UCLA, USC and Miami.”

NDI: Do you have any other visits scheduled?

Austin: “No. I’m just thinking about if I should go up to Florida during the summer, which I’m still deciding.”

NDI: What’s your thought process on when you want to have a commitment decision?

Austin: “I’m being persuaded by my parents and coaches in different directions. My parents say they want me to commit during the summer before my senior season. My coaches have been telling me to go on all five of my official visits and then commit. It will be less stressful. I’m still deciding and thinking about what I should do.”

NDI: What do you think will be the deciding factor that makes one school stand out when you end up making a commitment?

Austin: “Just the best place that fits for me, of course, athletically and academically.”

NDI: Do you have a list of top schools right now or are you still wide open?

Austin: “There are eight schools that I’ve been really thinking about putting my attention toward: USC, Notre Dame, Duke, Miami, Florida, Ohio State, Kentucky and Tennessee.” | 574-235-6214 | Twitter: @TJamesNDI
