Three-star RB C'Bo Flemister fills hole for Notre Dame

C’Bo Flemister wasn’t just under the radar when it came to Notre Dame. The Georgia High School running back was off it.

He was close to signing with Georgia Tech on Dec. 20, during the new early period for football, when an offer from Tennessee prompted the 6-foot, 192-pounder from Pike County High in Zebulon, Ga., to hit the pause button. Flemister originally had committed to Georgia Southern before pledging to the Yellow Jackets on Dec. 4.

Less than a month after the early signing period passed, the Irish got involved with a scholarship offer, and hosted Flemister on an official visit roughly a week and a half later (the weekend of Jan. 27). On Wednesday Flemister’s recruiting saga ended with a flipped commitment and signing with ND.

A December de-commitment by longtime committed running back Markese Stepp of Indianapolis — an eventual USC signee — and ND head coach Brian Kelly’s decision to dismiss running backs C.J. Holmes and Deon McIntosh last month put the running back position back on ND’s shopping list.

Junior Josh Adams, ND’s leading rusher in 2017 and second all-time in single-season yardage (1,430), declared as an early entry for the 2018 NFL Draft last month.

Thus, the Irish began the spring semester with three scholarship running backs — senior-to-be Dexter Williams, junior-to-be Tony Jones Jr., and freshman and early enrollee Jahmir Smith. They have 143 collegiate carries combined.

Both Rivals and 247Sports rate Flemister as a three-star prospect, a late bump from his longtime two-star status. 247Sports pegs Flemister as the No. 40 running back in the 2018 class.

Flemister rushed for 2,348 yards and 35 TDs in his senior season at Pike County.

"Flemister had a really good year," CBS Sports recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said. "That's why everybody's coming after him now.

"Getting a good running back this late in the year is pretty good. He's a back that could surprise people. He's close to a four-star back."
