OL Jarrett Patterson picks Notre Dame over UCLA
An offseason shakeup hasn’t stopped Notre Dame offensive line recruiting from continuing to roll.
Jarrett Patterson, a 6-foot-5, 275-pound senior at Mission Viejo (Calif.) High, signed with the Irish on Wednesday.
Patterson becomes the first offensive lineman to commit to Notre Dame since offensive line coach Harry Hiestand left Notre Dame for the Chicago Bears in January. The addition of Patterson gives new Irish offensive line coach Jeff Quinn a four-man unit on the offensive line in his first class with the Irish.
Quinn inherited the first three commitments: three-star recruits Cole Mabry, John Dirksen and Luke Jones. With an important assist from recruiting coordinator Brian Polian, Quinn was able to add Patterson to the list.
Patterson, slated as a four-star recruit and the No. 17 offensive tackle in the 2018 class by 247Sports, visited Notre Dame in January before Quinn was promoted to his new role with the program. But Polian, ND’s West Coast ace recruiter, kept Patterson’s Irish recruitment alive without an offensive line coach in place.
Notre Dame made its final push last week by sending head coach Brian Kelly, offensive coordinator Chip Long, Quinn and Polian for an in-home visit. With that effort, the Irish were able to beat out Patterson’s other finalist, UCLA.
"He had a really good senior year, but he's still more of a developmental type of offensive lineman,” said CBS Sports Network recruiting analyst Tom Lemming. “He has the size and the athletic ability that scouts like to see."
Patterson, rated as a three-star recruit and the No. 29 offensive tackle by Rivals, was previously committed to Arizona State and also fielded offers from Auburn, Michigan, Nebraska, Duke and others.
