Notebook: Top 2020 recruits visiting Notre Dame
The year 2020 may feel far away, but it's already in the sights of Notre Dame's football staff.
The Irish have already identified some of the top prospects in the 2020 recruiting class and extended them offers.
Not many recruits in the 2020 class have a higher profile than Bryan Bresee. The sophomore defensive end has been ranked as the No. 1 overall recruit by 247Sports and a five-star prospect by Rivals.
Bresee will make his first unofficial visit to Notre Dame on Friday. He received an offer from the Irish in December.
The 6-foot-5, 275-pound product of Damascus (Md.) High has already fielded offers from the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Florida State and Penn State.
"He's the No. 1 defensive lineman in the country for the class of 2020," said CBS Sports Network recruiting analyst Tom Lemming. "Outstanding athlete. He reminds me of Joey Bosa, who went to Ohio State and plays for the Los Angeles Chargers. He's relentless, tough and very aggressive."
The Irish also hosted one of their top cornerback targets in the 2020 class Thursday. RJ Mickens, who added an Irish offer last week, made his second unofficial visit to Notre Dame. The 6-1, 175-pound sophomore previously attended the N.C. State game last season.
The four-star recruit recorded 99 tackles, four forced fumbles, three tackles for a loss and two interceptions with one returned for a touchdown at Southlake (Texas) Carroll. Mickens has received offers from Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Alabama, Clemson and Stanford.
"He has great instincts," Lemming said. "He could be an impact cover corner. He could be a premier player."
247Sports slates Mickens as the No. 4 cornerback in the 2020 class.
Last week, the Irish hosted defensive end Jacolbe Cowan, the No. 3 strongside defensive end in the 2020 class according to 247Sports.
New DE offer
Josiah Miamen's visit to Notre Dame on Thursday ended with a scholarship offer.
The Irish became just the third FBS program to offer the 6-4, 215-pound junior. Northwestern and Illinois offered Miamen previously.
Last season at Dunlap (Ill.) High, Miamen totaled 42 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss and nine sacks as a defensive end and 33 receptions for 561 yards and 10 touchdowns on offense.
247Sports slates Miamen as a three-star recruit and the No. 44 weakside defensive end. Rivals rates him as a three-star tight end.
Wright visit
Easter recruiting visits aren't typical at Notre Dame. But when a four-star wide receiver is in the area on a Midwest visit spree, the Irish made accommodations.
Dylan Wright, a 6-5, 198-pound junior, stopped in South Bend on Sunday after making trips to Ohio State, Michigan and Indiana over the weekend.
Notre Dame joined Wright's offer list, which also includes Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama, Oklahoma and USC, in February.
As a junior at West Mesquite (Texas) High, Wright caught 32 passes for 545 yards and seven touchdowns.
"He's a good wide receiver," Lemming said. "He's one of the better recruits in north Texas. He has good size and good hands. He's a really good four-star player."
Rivals ranks him as the No. 34 wide receiver in the 2019 class. 247Sports slates him No. 36 at the position.
Tyson to Alabama
Notre Dame's quarterback options in the 2019 class shrunk by one Thursday. Paul Tyson, who received an offer from the Irish in September, verbally committed to Alabama.
The 6-4, 210-pound junior at Trussville (Ala.) Hewitt-Trussville decided to stay in his home state to play for the Crimson Tide. Tyson is the great grandson of legendary Alabama football coach Bear Bryant.
247Sports slates Tyson as the No. 7 pro-style quarterback in the 2019 class. Rivals ranks him No. 8.
Only two 2019 quarterbacks with Notre Dame offers remain uncommitted: Grant Gunnell and Max Duggan, both four-star recruits.
