Notre Dame's recruiting weekend will be headlined by the eight official visits from rising seniors, but a target in the 2020 class will also make his way to campus for an unofficial visit.

Four-star offensive lineman Trey Wedig told ND Insider he will return to Notre Dame this weekend.

Wedig, a 6-foot-7, 301-pound product of Wales (Wisc.) Kettle Moraine, received a Notre Dame offer the last time he was on campus for the Blue-Gold Game in April. He has since added USC to an offer list that already included Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota.

With three offensive line commitments in the 2019 class, Irish offensive line coach Jeff Quinn can turn some of his attention to the 2020 class. Wedig is one of 11 offensive linemen in the 2020 class to have reported a Notre Dame offer.

247Sports slates Wedig as the No. 22 offensive tackle in the 2020 class.

Mertz sticking with Wisconsin

After Notre Dame lost a commitment from 2019 quarterback Cade McNamara in March, Wisconsin quarterback commit Graham Mertz became the first new offer extended by the Irish.

Notre Dame pushed to get the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Mertz on campus following the April offer, but a visit never materialized.

Now Mertz has publicly shut down his recruitment. After making an official visit to Madison last weekend, Mertz tweeted a statement Thursday night reaffirming his commitment.

"I am ready to move on past the recruitment process and just play ball," Mertz wrote as part of his statement. "I owe it to my teammates to completely shut down my recruitment and focus on winning another state title. This process has shown me that Wisconsin is the best fit for me as a student-athlete."

Mertz completed 259 of his 434 passes (62 percent) for 3,684 yards and 45 touchdowns with six interceptions in his junior season at Mission (Kan.) Blue Valley North.

Rivals ranks Mertz as the No. 4 pro-style quarterback in the 2019 class. 247Sports slates him No. 7.

The Irish are hosting their latest quarterback target in the 2019 class this weekend for an official visit: three-star recruit Brendon Clark, a former Wake Forest commit.

Freshmen arrive

Notre Dame's 2018 recruiting class will officially join the Irish program this weekend. Many of the incoming freshmen were set to arrive on campus Friday with the summer session set to start Monday.

Notre Dame's 27-man class finished ranked 10th nationally by 247Sports. Rivals ranked the class No. 11.

Seven members of the 2018 class enrolled in January: defensive back Houston Griffith, linebackers Bo Bauer, Jack Lamb and Ovie Oghofuo, running back Jahmir Smith, wide receiver Micah Jones and tight end George Takacs.

Several of Notre Dame's June enrollees could have an impact as freshmen including wide receivers Kevin Austin, Braden Lenzy and Lawrence Keys III, defensive tackle Jayson Ademilola and rover Shayne Simon.

Four-star offensive lineman Trey Wedig, a 2020 recruit, planned to make a return visit to Notre Dame this weekend.
