Mississippi State RF Tanner Allen wins SEC Player of the Year, Ole Miss LHP Doug Nikhazy first-team All-SEC
The awards are starting to roll in for Mississippi State right fielder Tanner Allen.
Allen, a senior from Theodore, Alabama, was named the SEC's Player of the Year by the league's coaches Monday. Allen won the SEC's batting title by hitting .387 and ranks fourth in the conference in on-base percentage (.460) and seventh in the league in slugging percentage (.618). He hit eight home runs, scored 54 times and led Mississippi State with 53 RBIs.
Allen is only the second Mississippi State player to win the award since it was established in 1993, joining Brent Rooker who won in 2017.
The rest of the All-SEC teams are littered with Mississippi State and Ole Miss players. Allen was named first-team All-SEC, as was Ole Miss starting pitcher Doug Nikhazy. Nikhazy ranks top five in the SEC in ERA (2.12), batting average against (.179), wins (eight) and strikeouts (107). In SEC play, Nikhazy posted a 1.67 ERA with 85 strikeouts in 59 1/3 innings.

Mississippi State outfielder Rowdey Jordan and relief pitcher Landon Sims and Ole MIss catcher Hayden Dunhurst and third baseman Justin Bench were all named second-team All-SEC. Dunhurst and Sims joined Mississippi State pitcher Will Bednar and catcher Logan Tanner on the SEC's All-Newcomer team, made up of players who were first-year players last season but had their freshman seasons cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jordan batted .315 with nine home runs and the third-most runs scored in the SEC. Sims has a 0.49 ERA with eight saves and struck out 73 batters in just 37 innings. Bednar owns a 2.90 ERA with 97 strikeouts in 67 innings. Tanner hit .286 and led Mississippi State with 11 home runs. Bench batted .327 with a .438 on-base percentage and leads the SEC with 23 hit-by-pitches.
Dunhurst, who leads the SEC in pickoffs and ranks second in the league in caught stealings, was also named to the SEC's All-Defense team.
Ole Miss freshmen Jacob Gonzalez and TJ McCants were both named to the SEC's All-Freshman team. Gonzalez hit .349 with a .975 OPS and his 58 runs scored rank second most in the SEC. McCants batted .335 with a .900 OPS and is a perfect 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts.
Rebels senior Tim Elko was named the SEC's Scholar Athlete of the Year.
