When will hear from Te'o?
When will Manti Te’o weigh in on the recent hoax revelations? That's a key question we still don't have an answer to today.
There's been much discussion of a possible interview today, but nothing is confirmed. We are learning key new details and finding more perspective on this shocking story.
Notre Dame says the star Irish linebacker got duped by someone claiming to be his girlfriend.
Teo's story gained national attention when it was believed his grandmother and girlfriend both died from cancer in the middle of the season.
Now the University says that girlfriend doesn't exist – is not a real person.
Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick says Teo learned about the hoax when he received a phone call and heard the voice of the women he believed to be his girlfriend on December 6, many weeks after her reported death
This is was Teo said in front of a WSBT camera two days after that alleged phone call while in New York for the Heisman Trophy Events. He was asked about this charity work, including Relay for Life, a cancer organization.
I worked with the relay for life stuff since I really got hit with cancer,” he said. “I don’t like cancer at all since I lost both my grandparents and my girlfriend to cancer.”
Those at the website Deadspin.com who broke this story are now talking.
Deadspin Editor Timothy Burke says Ronaiah Tuiasosopo is behind the online profile for Lennay Kekua... And claims he's known Manti Teo for years.
Deadspin says Tuiasosopo's friends and family talked to them about this fake profile.
“They told us that he has been doing the Lennay Kekua fake online profile for several years and that he's caught other people in its trap, but that they caught on way earlier than Manti Te'o did,” said Burke. “In fact, the longest I think that he ever got away with pretending to have an online relationship with somebody was about a month. So you sort of question, especially when you consider that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo knew Manti Te'o, that they spent time together, that there are pictures of them together supposedly on his Instagram account. You know, how dense would manti te'o have to be to not realize this was his friend who was behind the account the entire time?”
