Ted Burgmeier, a three-year starter at cornerback for Notre Dame and member of the 1977 national championship team, died Sunday morning. He was 57.
His health had been deteriorating the past three years when a new heart valve was damaged by previous radiation treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma.
A native of East Dubuque, Iowa, Burgmeier was a four-sport athlete at Wahlert (Iowa) High School. He graduated Notre Dame in 1978 and was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the NFL draft. He then played one season in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Burgmeier was part of a secondary in 1977 that featured fellow cornerback Luther Bradley, strong safety Jim Browner and free safety Joe Restic.
