It's back to school for Notre Dame stars Grant, Daniels

SOUTH BEND -- Now the real work begins for two fallen stars.

A University of Notre Dame spokesman confirmed Wednesday that DaVaris Daniels and Jerian Grant, star players for ND’s football and men’s basketball teams, respectively, have been readmitted to the school for the summer term after each missed the spring semester because of academic missteps.

Daniels is a senior-to-be wide receiver. Grant is returning for a fifth year.

The 6-foot-2, 203-pound Daniels is Notre Dame’s leading returning receiver, with 49 catches for 745 yards and seven touchdowns last season, but he has also been arguably its most enigmatic.

He admitted, in an interview with’s Jeremy Fowler, that he briefly but seriously considered jumping into the NFL Draft pool when he first learned of his academic ineligibility, but Daniels quickly decided to push for a return to ND.

“Look, we all know he's immensely talented,” ND head coach Brian Kelly said May 15 at a charity function. “He's got to have his foot on the pedal all the time. And if he does, he's as good as anybody out there, that I've coached. But there's only so many times you can go to the whip. And this is proof-positive, right? Sooner or later you've got to do it.

“And I think this, hopefully, is that time where he goes, 'I've got to be cognizant of the fact that I've got a lot riding on this. I've got to be that guy every single down.' "

Daniels, who redshirted as a freshman in 2011, potentially has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Grant, the leading scorer (19.0) and assist man (6.0) for ND’s men’s basketball team at the time of his ineligibility, will also have to reintegrate himself with his team this summer. He is expected to accompany the Irish on their foreign tour of Italy, which starts the first week of August.

The last game the 6-5, 203-pound guard played in during the 2013-14 season was a 64-61 loss to Ohio State, Dec. 21 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Irish finished their first season as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference 15-17 overall and 6-12 in conference play.

The team was 7-13 after Grant’s season ended. He watched in person from the stands ND’s 81-69 season-ending loss to Wake Forest in the ACC Tourney in Greensboro, N.C.
