Tommy Rees will get another crack at the NFL.

This time, as a coach.

The former Notre Dame quarterback, who spent last season as an offensive graduate assistant at Northwestern, has been hired by the San Diego Chargers as an offensive assistant, the team announced Tuesday.

Three of Rees' former Irish teammates currently inhabit the Chargers' roster: linebacker Manti Te'o and offensive linemen Chris Watt and Trevor Robinson.

In his four seasons at Notre Dame, Rees started 30 games and passed for 7,351 yards with 61 touchdowns and 37 interceptions. He was the team's starting quarterback throughout his sophomore and senior seasons, passing for 2,871 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2011 and 3,257 yards with 27 touchdowns in 2013.

Rees signed as an undrafted free agent with the Washington Redskins in 2014 but was released prior to the season.
