Notre Dame was ranked No. 9 in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll, which was released on Thursday.

Reigning national champion Alabama was ranked No. 1 with 1585 total points and 55 first place votes. Clemson, the national runner-up last season, was slotted at No. 2 with 1524 points and seven first place votes.

Of the teams that lost three games in 2015, Florida State (No. 4), LSU (No. 6) and Michigan (No. 8) were ranked higher than Notre Dame.
