In 2016, Tribune sports writer Mike Vorel told the story of former Notre Dame football player Will Mahone’s imperfect road to redemption.

On Friday, that story was deemed the best in the nation in the Associated Press Sports Editors 2016 contest in feature writing for newspapers in the 30,000-75,000 circulation category.

The piece, titled Will Mahone finds peace after losing Notre Dame football dream, took first place out of 126 entries from writers nationwide. Vorel will be presented with a plaque at the 2017 APSE banquet, June 26-29 in New Orleans.

The running back from Austintown, Ohio, was a reserve for the Irish in the 2012 and 2013 seasons before an arrest in his hometown in June of 2014 effectively ended his Notre Dame career.
