Notre Dame's Adams, McGlinchey and Morgan named to preseason award watch lists
Watch List Week is here, and Notre Dame is already well represented.
Watch lists for two annual college football awards — the Maxwell Award and Bednarik Award — were announced on Monday. Graduate student left tackle Mike McGlinchey and junior running back Josh Adams appeared on the watch list for the Maxwell Award, which honors college football's player of the year. Senior linebacker Nyles Morgan was included on the watch list for the Bednarik Award, which awards college football's premier defensive player.
A 6-foot-8, 312-pound graduate student, McGlinchey will start for the second consecutive season at the left tackle position in 2017. The two-time Irish captain will again line up next to senior left guard Quenton Nelson, a fellow captain.
Adams — a 6-2, 220-pound junior — has earned 1,768 rushing yards with 11 touchdowns, averaging 6.4 yards per carry, in his first two seasons in South Bend. He'll be a focal point in the Irish backfield, alongside fellow running backs Dexter Williams and Tony Jones Jr., this fall.
On the defensive side, Morgan — a 6-1, 238-pound senior — led the Irish with 94 tackles and four sacks in 2016, in his first season as Notre Dame's full-time starting middle linebacker. A first-time captain, Morgan is expected to lead the way in the middle of first-year defensive coordinator Mike Elko's 4-2-5 defense.
The John Mackey Award (presented to the nation’s most outstanding tight end) and the Rimington Trophy (honoring the nation’s premier center) will be released on Tuesday.
