Notre Dame will soon require people to carry clear bags for large events at Notre Dame Stadium and other campus venues.

The new policy, which the university says will boost security, will be optional for today’s Blue-Gold Game at the stadium.

The new policy, however, will be in effect for the Irish football team’s season opener Sept. 1 against Michigan. That’s when it also becomes official for all reserve-ticketed events, including concerts, for Purcell Pavilion and the Compton Family Ice Arena as well.

The policy allows for only clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags that don’t exceed 12-by-6-by-12 inches, or a one-gallon clear plastic bag, such as Ziploc or Glad. Other parts of the policy include:

• The bags may have a logo on them, but no larger than 4-by-3.4 inches.

• Small clutches — 4½-by-6 inches, or about the size of a hand —will be permitted. Exceptions also will be made for approved medical bags or equipment, which will be inspected at designated gates.

• Seat cushions, measuring 16-by 16 inches are permitted, as are binoculars and cameras without cases. Blankets will be allowed, too, but will be subject to search.

• Among the prohibited items: purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, luggage, computer bags, camera bags, binoculars cases and diaper bags.

“Safety and security on campus is our highest priority,” said Mike Seamon, vice president for campus safety and event management. “This new policy will be will be a significant addition to the many safeguards we have in place.”

The university says the policy will speed up fans’ entry into the stadium. There will also be express lines for fans who don’t have any carry-in items.

Once the policy is in place, fans who don’t meet the criteria will be asked to return those bags to their cars, hotel rooms or homes. In addition, a delivery vendor will be available outside Notre Dame Stadium, before football games, to ship at cost bags or belongings that don’t meet the new university policy.

Approved bags will be available for purchase at the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore and kiosks outside the stadium on game day.
