Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly spoke to reporters Friday before the Irish report for spring football on Saturday. The Irish will conclude the 15 practice sessions with the annual Blue-Gold Game April 13 at Notre Dame Stadium.

Kelly addressed a number of topics Friday including:

• Kelly said he couldn't talk about things in absolute terms yet. "I really like the leadership that's developing within our 2019 team," Kelly said.

• Junior Avery Davis has moved to cornerback. Once a quarterback recruit, Davis moved to running back last year. "I think he will be a really good corner" Kelly said. "I think he could play at the next level."

• Junior Darnell Ewell, who played offensive line last year after being recruited as a four-star defensive tackle, has moved back to the defensive line.

• Senior Asmar Bilal, who started at rover in 2018, will move inside to buck linebacker, Kelly said. Senior Troy Pride Jr. will remain at field cornerback, Kelly said. Houston Griffith will be one of many competing at Julian Love's former position — boundary corner.

• Cornerback Shaun Crawford, offensive lineman Colin Grunhard, cornerback Donte Vaughn, defensive tackle Hunter Spears, rover Jack Kiser and nose guard Jamion Franklin are expected to miss or be limited for spring football, Kelly said.

• In early February, receiver Javon McKinley was charged with three misdemeanors, including two counts of battery. The senior will be on the suspended list until Notre Dame clears up his situation from a legal standpoint, Kelly said.

• The spring will allow the Irish to take a look at a few positions. "The linebacker position, there's going to be a lot of guys moving in and out," said Kelly on what position he's looking forward to watch. "...There will be a lot of guys that will need a lot of work. Cornerbacks are another. Those two really stand out to me."

• Former Irish quarterback Brandon Wimbush transferred to UCF following the 2018 season, leaving Ian Book and Phil Jurkovec as ND's scholarship quarterbacks this spring. "There are so many nuances that he has to work on, like pocket presence," Kelly said of Book.

• Kelly said team captains could be named later this month.

• Receiver Chase Claypool will move to Miles Boykin's former position, while Chris Finke will remain at slot receiver. Kelly said there will be competition at field receiver. Kevin Austin Jr. will play both the boundary and field receiver positions, Kelly said.

• Kelly did not close the door on signing another graduate transfer beyond former Virginia Tech receiver Eric Kumah. Kumah visited the Irish last weekend as he weighs his transfer destination.
