Zach Auguste links up with L.A. Lakers
Undrafted Notre Dame forward Zach Auguste at least now knows where his professional basketball career will start.
Where it all will lead is a whole different matter.
For now, the 6-foot-10, 245-pound Marlborough, Mass., product is thrilled to have an opportunity to play on the Los Angeles Lakers' summer league team.
“Real excited and looking forward to be joining the Lakers for summer league! #JustTheStart,” Auguste tweeted Saturday on his Twitter account.
Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders was the first to report the news.
A Lakers rep told Irish head coach Mike Brey that nobody who the team worked out played the pick and roll better than Auguste. Still, he’s considered a long shot to eventually make the Lakers’ regular-season roster, with the D-League or Europe more likely destinations.
Auguste, a May graduate from ND, was not one of the 60 players selected in the two-round NBA Draft, held Thursday night. Teammate Demetrius Jackson, an early entry, was a second-round pick of the Boston Celtics.
Auguste averaged 14.0 points and an ACC-leading 10.7 rebounds a game last season as the Irish reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.
