Notre Dame baseball: No bid for ND; IU, Valpo to meet
While Notre Dame won’t be participating in the NCAA Baseball Tournament, the area will be well represented by four former prep stars.
Notre Dame wasn’t picked for the 64-team field by the NCAA selection committee Sunday despite a 34-24 final record, No. 32 RPI and an appearance in the Big East championship game this past weekend.
Indiana University will host one regional tournament, beginning Friday in Bloomington. Austin Peay will meet Florida at 1 p.m. with the host Hoosiers meeting Valparaiso at 7.
LaPorte’s Dustin DeMuth is the starting third basemen for the hosts. The 2010 LaPorte High School graduate hit .399 during his junior season with five home runs and 38 RBIs.
Valparaiso has two area players on its roster, in sophomore utility player Kyle Schneider of Penn and freshman right handed pitcher Drew Hasler from Marian.
Schneider hit .281 this season with 13 RBIs, while Hasler sports a 1-0 record and a 2.14 ERA.
Riley graduate Brett Carlson is the starting second baseman for Austin Peay.
The sophomore has hit .233 this season with 11 RBIs.
Indiana, the Big Ten champs who sport a 43-14 record, is the top seed in the regional, while Valpo (31-26) is the fourth seed. Austin Peay earned the second seed with a 45-13 record. Florida is 29-28.
