Notre Dame volleyball: Irish fizzle after solid start

Notre Dame erupted for 16 kills in the first game for a strong start, but Virginia took the momentum in the second game and stayed in control for a 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-23) victory over the Irish Sunday At Charlottsville.

Toni Alugbue and Jen Houser had 11 kills and Nicole Smith 10 for the Irish who dropped to 8-13 overall and 2-8 in the ACC.

Virginia is 12-10 and 5-5.

Maggie Brindock had 37 assists and Alugbue 17 digs. Houser had six blocks and Brindock 5.

Notre Dame (8-13, 2-8 ACC) plays at home next weekend for matches with Maryland (4 p.m. Friday) and Pittsburgh (1 p.m. Sunday).
