Notre Dame swimming: ND grabs 1st-day lead

Freshman Joe Petrone took six seconds off his top time in the 500 freestyle to win the event in 4:30.39 to help lead Notre Dame after the first day of the Shamrock Invitational.

Notre Dame leads Iowa 66-44 and Missouri State 58-52 after the first night.

Freshman Joe Coumos gave Notre Dame its second event win of the evening with a 353.55 total in the 3-meter dive.

The second day of the Shamrock Invitational begins Saturday at 10 a.m.
