Notre Dame hockey: ND hockey fit to be tied
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senior goaltender Steven Summerhays had a career-high 47 saves and Notre Dame got goals from T.J. Tynan and Sam Herr as the Irish battled ninth-ranked Providence to a 2-2 tie in front of a sellout crowd of 2,978 at Schneider Arena on Friday night.
John Gilmour and Nick Saracino scored for Providence as Friar goaltender Jon Gillies made 26 saves in the tie.
The tie is just the second of the season for Notre Dame (16-12-2, 5-9-2 Hockey East). Providence is 15-8-6 on the season and 7-6-2 in conference action.
After falling behind 1-0, Notre Dame tied the game at 6:04 of the second period when Tynan notched his eighth of the season, beating Gillies on a breakaway.
The Irish took a 2-1 lead at 13:49 as Herr snapped a seven-game goal-less drought, deflecting a Stephen Johns shot over Gillies for his 13th of the season. Tynan also assisted on the goal, collecting the 100th assist of his career. He is just one of 11 players in Irish history to record 100 assists.
The lead did not last long as Providence got the equalizer just 1:11 later when Saracino scored his sixth of the season at 13:49 to make it 2-2.
For the game, Notre Dame was 0-5 on the power play, while Providence was 0-3.
In overtime, the Friars would out shoot the Irish by a 5-0 margin, but Summerhays came up big to hold on to the 2-2 tie.
The two teams will meet in the second game of the series at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday.
