Notre Dame lacrosse: Penn State tops Irish

Notre Dame’s Matt Kavangh had three goals and a pair of assists but 12th-ranked Penn State spoiled No. 4 ND’s home-opener with an 8-7 win Saturday in South Bend.

Leading 5-3 at halftime, the Nittany Lions increased their edge to four with back-to-back goals early in the third quarter.

The Irish (1-1) scored three times in under two minutes to draw to within one but couldn’t find the equalizer.

Shane Sturgis led Penn State (2-1) with five goals and an assist.
