Notre Dame softball: Irish offense erupts

In Blacksburg, Va., Notre Dame banged out 14 hits in a 9-5 victory over Virginia Tech.

A pair of home runs — Katey Haus and Cassidy Whidden — gave No. 22 Notre Dame (19-7, 3-3 ACC) its fifth multi home run game of the season.

Virginia Tech is 13-12 (4-4 ACC) and Notre Dame is 19-7 (3-3).

Jenna Simon paced the Irish with three hits and two stolen bases. Karley Wester, Whidden, Haus and Laura Winter each contributed two hits apiece.

Winner Laura Winter (13-3) moved into a tie with Heather Booth (’06) for the Notre Dame career wins record with her 96th victory.

Notre Dame is scheduled to host its first ACC series next weekend at Melissa Cook Stadium, welcoming Pittsburgh for a three-game league set. First pitch on Saturday is set for noon (ET).
