Notre Dame baseball: Irish grab first ACC win

The Notre Dame baseball team posted its first ACC win with a 2-1 victory over Virginia Tech Friday at Four Winds Field in South Bend.

ND's Sean Fitzgerald (3-1) needed 119 pitches to rack up his fifth quality start as he shut down the Hokies for much of the night, giving up just one run on six hits. He also walked one and struck out three. The lone run and two of the six hits came in the ninth inning.

ND improved to 8-12 overall and 1-6 in league play. The Hokies are 10-9, 3-4.

The teams continue their series at 4:30 p.m. Saturday as they head to Westfield, Ind., and Grand Park.
