Notre Dame softball: Haus, Winter lead Irish in opener

Katey Haus went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Lauren Stuhr homered to lead No. 2 seeded Notre Dame to an 8-0 victory over Long Beach State in the first game of the NCAA regional at Easton Stadium in Los Angeles Friday.

The No. 19/20 Irish (40-11) advance into the winners bracket and will face either No. 1 seed UCLA or Southern Utah at 3 p.m. EDT Saturday.

Laura Winter scattered three hits, walked one and struck out five in six innings.

The Irish started strong with two first inning runs.

Junior Katey Haus added two hits and a team-high three RBIs, while NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year Top 10 finalist Karley Wester and junior Jenna Simon added two hits, a stolen base and two runs scored each.

Sophomore Micaela Arizmendi chipped in a pair of base hits, including the game-winning walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The No. 19/20 Irish (40-11) advance into the winners bracket and will face either No. 1 seed UCLA or Southern Utah at 3 p.m. EDT Saturday.

Notre Dame has now won 40 or more games in six straight seasons.
