Broncos top Irish hockey

A pair of third period goals broke a 2-2 deadlock and lifted the Western Michigan hockey team (7-8-2) to a 4-2 win over Notre Dame (9-10-2) in front of 3,017 on Friday night at the Broncos’ Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich.

“It’s frustrating because if we played all 60 minutes like we did the second period, we probably would have won the game tonight,” Notre Dame head coach Jeff Jackson said. “For some reason, again, we’re missing the consistency to be able to do that for the whole game.”

Mario Lucia scored late in the first period for Notre Dame and the Irish took a brief 2-1 lead 1:27 into the second period on a goal by Jordan Gross.

Western Michigan tied the game 2-2 late in the second period and took over in the third.

Cal Peterson had 22 saves for ND which hosts Western Michigan Saturday at 6:05 p.m. at the Compton Family Ice Arena. NBC Sports Network will broadcast the game nationally.
