BOSTON – Notre Dame goaltender Cal Petersen made 44 saves and the Irish held on to knock off No. 2-ranked Boston University, 3-2, Saturday night.

Notre Dame (14-15-5, 9-6-5 in Hockey East) jumped on top 2-0 on goals from Mario Lucia and Sam Herr, before Boston scored late in the second period. Vince Hinostroza added a third-period goal to help the Irish hang on. BU outshot ND, 46-22

The Terriers dipped to 19-6-5, 13-4-3.  Notre Dame vaulted into a tie for third place in the Hockey East standings with UMass Lowell and Providence. The top four teams get a first round bye in the Hockey East tournament.

Petersen stopped 78 of 82 shots in two games (2-2 draw Friday night),  the four goals against marking the fewest all year in a weekend series against a single opponent by the nation’s second-ranked offense in BU.

Notre Dame is unbeaten in its last seven games against BU, posting a 5-0-2 record.
