Irish rout Devils in opener

SOUTH BEND — Anders Bjork scored less than one minute into the game and added a second goal in the first period as No. 9 Notre Dame opened its 2016-17 season with a 9-2 win over Arizona State Friday night at the Compton Family Ice Arena.

The junior wing lit the lamp at the 0:33 mark on assists from Connor Hurley and Dylan Malmquist, Jordan Gross put the Irish (1-0) up 2-0 with a goal at 6:43, and Bjork scored again less than a minute later and the rout was on against the Sun Devils (0-1), who are in their second season of Division I hockey.

Sophomore Bobby Nardella and junior Bo Brauer had two goals apiece as Notre Dame outshot the visitors, 51-19.

Junior goalkeeper Cal Petersen made 10 saves and freshman Tory Dello led the team with seven shots and had a pair of assists.
