Big third period carries Irish

BOSTON, Mass. — With the score tied 2-2 after two periods, Notre Dame took off with third period goals by Cam Morrison, Jake Evans and Andrew Peeke to lift the ninth-ranked Irish hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Northeastern on Saturday night at Matthews Arena (3,511).

The win was No. 250 for head coach Jeff Jackson at Notre Dame and his Irish improved to 5-3-1 (2-1-0 Hockey East).

Andrew Oglevie and Jake Evans each finished with a goal and two assists.

Cam Morrison finished with a goal and an assist and Dennis Gilbert and Anders Bjork each had two assists.

In the Notre Dame net, Cal Petersen made 23 saves, including 12 in a busy first period to ensure the Huskies only took a 1-0 lead to the locker room.

The teams traded goals through the first two periods of play, including a Notre Dame power-play goal by Jordan Gross early in the second and an Oglevie tally near the end of the second period.

Morrison broke the tie to give the Irish their first lead of the game, 3-2, at 8:54 of the third.

Evans and Peeke then scored just over a minute apart, at 13:48 and 14:55 of the third, to ice the win. The goal was the first of Peeke's career.

On special teams, Notre Dame was 1-for-2 on the power play, while Northeastern finished 2-for-3.

Northeastern starter Ryan Ruck totaled 22 saves.
