Wegwerth sparks Irish
SOUTH BEND — Joe Wegwerth scored twice and fifth-ranked Notre Dame rebounded for a 3-1 win over Sacred Heart on Friday night at the Compton Family Ice Arena, following Thursday's 6-4 loss.
Wegwerth put the Irish (3-2-1) up 1-0 3:51 into the first period on passes from Jordan Gross and Andrew Peeke and that was the score at the end of the first period. Dawson Cook pushed the ND advantage to 2-0 with a goal at 12:54 in the second period with assists from Jack Jenkins and Bo Brauer.
Less than four minutes later, Wegwerth extended the lead, redirecting a rebound shot off the stick of Colin Theisen after Peeke had put the initial shot on goal. Cale Morris made 24 saves.
Sacred Heart (2-3-0) got a goal from Austin McIlmurray at the 8:31 mark of the third period but the Pioneers were outshot 43-25.
