No. 11 Notre Dame falls to No. 4 Ohio State, but stays in second place
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Freddy Gerard’s second goal of the game broke a 2-2 tie and helped No. 4 Ohio State to an eventual 4-2 Big Ten Hockey Conference victory over No. 11 Notre Dame Friday night before 6,869 fans at Value City Arena.
Notre Dame (14-9-3, 7-7-2-2 Big Ten for 25 points) fell behind Ohio State 2-0 early in the second period. But Jeff Jackson’s squad got a power-play goal from red-hot freshman Michael Graham at 9:28 and a goal from Cam Morrison 34 seconds later to send the game into the third period tied 2-2.
Gerard, who scored at 14:57 of the first period to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead, then scored the game-winner at 7:38 with the Irish shorthanded. Brendon Kearney added an empty-net goal at 19:59 for the final score.
Austin Pooley had given Ohio State a 2-0 lead before Graham and Morrison, returning to action after suffering an upper-body injury against Minnesota last month, knotted the score. It was Graham’s seventh goal in the last five games.
Cale Morris made 22 saves for Notre Dame. Ohio State’s Sean Romeo made 27.
Defenseman Andrew Peeke had assists on both of the Notre Dame goals. Besides Morrison, Cal Burke was in the lineup after sitting out the last four games following an appendectomy.
Ohio State (16-5-4, 9-3-3-2 Big Ten for 32 points) leads the Irish by seven points and Michigan and Minnesota by eight.
The Wolverines beat the Gophers, 4-2, in Minneapolis Friday.
