Irish win in Ann Arbor
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Cam Morrison and Matt Hellickson broke a scoreless tie with goals within a 3:26 span early in the third period as Notre Dame beat Michigan, 2-1, in Big Ten Conference hockey Friday at the Yost Ice Arena.
The victory lifted the Irish to 32 points in the standings, one ahead of Michigan State and Ohio State who were playing Friday night in East Lansing, Mich. The Irish are one point behind third-place Michigan, which trailed Penn State and Minnesota by three points heading into the evening.
Morrison’s goal, off assists from Michael Graham and Alex Steeves, came at 4:05 of the third period after the two teams had battled to a 0-0 draw for two periods. It was his ninth goal of the season.
Hellickson then took feeds from Graham and Tory Dello to make it 2-0 at 7:31.
Cale Morris made 34 saves for the Irish and only allowed a extra-skater goal at 19:17 by Michigan’s Jacob Hayhurst. Strauss Mann made 26 saves.
